I did the oil change last month.
the mechanic found some coolant mark on the oil cap, so, he said might be the coolant went inside the engine.
he told me there are many ways can cause this, he suggested try the cheapest way first... change the pcv valve..

I search on ebey, the price range for the pcv valve is big,
anyone knows the the difference between them? any part number for it?

I found this on ebay, is it a good one to my 2001 QX4 3.5L ?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... ink:top:en

please give me advice

Thank you

The PCV valve is a pain in the a** to get to. It requires removing upper and lower intake manifolds if I'm not mistaken.

OEM PCV valve is $12.09 from Courtesy Parts: http://www.courtesyparts.com/11810-pcv- ... _7668_9286&

Correct, but OP has an '01 QX4 with the VQ35DE as stated. Read this thread for the location of the PCV valve.

Is the PCV valve really a maintenance item that should be replaced, even without any signs of issues?

Becareful with which one you order.

What happened in my case was i had the upper and lower intake plenums taken out to do the powervalves and clean it all up and replace the gaskets etc.

I also decided to order a pcv valve with all the other parts at my dealer, what ended up happening, was when i was taking the old one off i accidently snapped it, but i didn't care at first because im replacing it anyways.

Now i realized that the dealer had ordered me a non threaded PCV valve while mine was threaded, so now im like F i need the car back on the road after the weekend and i cant put it back together with no pcv valve there.

I ended up going to autozone while my dad worked on some other things like cleaning the plenums and stuff. And when i got there i asked the guy for a pcv for the 02 path, and he gave me one, and it was non threaded too.

So alot of these parts systems might not give the correct part for your car. I then asked him to bring me one from a 2003 350z or a 2003 maxima, and he did and it was the one i needed.

I later then returned the non threaded pcv valve the dealer sold me and got a refund no problem.

So what i would do in your position is order 2, a non threaded and threaded so your safe. then return the un-needed one.

Pics of said PCV valve and its hidden location?? I should probably change mine to.

Is the water heater valve also in that area?

And its just sandwiched under the clamp where the red arrow is pointing?

Simply pull off the hose and the pcv valve will be right there to twist out of the engine??

thanks for all reply..
basically, I think the PCV valve is not related to the coolant going into the engine, isn't it?
my engine bay is nice and clean, should I go change it?

haha - sorry if I'm just attacking all your threads...
but I had the same question in my head too while reading through this.
How would PCV have anything to do with coolant?
all the PCV does is release un-burned fumes from the crankcase/valve-cover back into the air-intake.
But who knows - I'm sure the mechanic has seen some awesome and wild stuff in his days as a mechanic, so I'm not one to question him.

For coolant in the oil, I would consider these things
  1. head gasket leak
  2. water pump leak
by the way - i know he said there's "coolant IN the oil filler cap", but have you checked your radiator to see if there's any oil there?
Just a suggestion to confirm what your mechanic saw.

Short and simple... All generations of Nissan Xterra have massive recalls ranging from IPDM/ECM break downs that damage all four of your catalytic converters, faulty fuel sending units, early breakdown of tensioners, air bags lights turns on for no apparent reason, and last but not least your transmission fluid going into the radiator then into the engine... otherwise known as the PINK MILSKSHAKE OF DEATH!!!! Your problem seems to be the latter, I agree, pop that radiator cap in the morning when the engine is cool and take a look. If your radiator fluid is no longer the normal greenish hue and rather a pink thick soup you are in for a treat...!! Repairs for that are 5000 alone for just the radiator and transmission not to mention another 5000 to repair the engine... Xterras are worthless... I bought three and they all had the same issues I was just stuborn but no more!!!! 4 more payments and I'm free and will be selling it at a loss after over 5k worth of repairs...!!!! I'm sure I missed a few recalls but from what you are saying your radiator maybe ready to die as Nissan runs the transmission fluid through the radiator to cool it... these cooper lines rust and leak into the radiator then contaminate the engine... there is a work around if you catch it in time just disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator, plug up the radiator, reroute the lines to an extra cooler (looks like a small radiator around $100 beats 5k) and install the cool in front of the radiator... you can also install a valve and extra tubes to switch the fluid from running into the new cooler during the winter and summer because the viscosity in the transmission fluid changes along with the climate! Good Luck people alot of tutuorials on youtube...Alan out! Ps Nissan will not repair these costs even if they are recalls as the hide behind their warranty... even if you are still within 500 miles on your warranty they may reject doing the repairs which almost happened to me at 98700k until I threatened lawsuit!! Consumer beware!!!
