Post

So after a bit of research, I decided to paint my brake calipers. Went back and forth between G2, Duplicolor, and VHT spray paint.

Called up a local body shop and he preferred working with spray paint. So after some consultation with this board I bought 2 cans of Red VHT Caliper Paint at Napa Auto Parts:

http://www.vhtpaint.com/caliperpaint.html

and one can of Duplicolor Engine Enamel Clear for clearcoating after the decals would go on.

Purchased myself a few reflective decals on eBay for $15.

Brought it in early morning and it was ready by noon. He put 5 coats for the calipers and 3 coats for clear coating. The VHT drys quickly so it needs to be applied all within 1 hour.

Cost me $35/caliper, about $20 in paint, and $15 for the decals.

Here are the pics. I guess it would've been even nicer if I had the Sport wheels, but that's what we have to deal with living in snowy Northeast.

Enjoy!

just going to give my honest opionion........i think you did an excellent job and writeup but you picked the wrong color....

red calipers should only be the choice of color on black sporty two door cars such as mustangs and camaro's, chargers, a few BMW M cars and maybe maybe a few AMG mercedes.....and thats about it

putting red calipers on an M is the same to me as putting red calipers on a Lexus....it would look terrible and stick out in a bad way. our cars our luxury machines and when you have a mixture (in your case) of black, chrome and alloy, you should follow that color pattern or another color along the same lines.....

the reason i say so is because that red is now a distraction to the eye when someone looks at your car from a side view.

another reason also, if you think about it....when people slightly tint the rear taillights on the M or for any car that has bright red tailights; it's to tone down the red color and to see the whole car as a beauty and not just a few highlights...and those highlights could be big red taillights,or a big chrome grill.

stuff like that needs to be toned down so your car can be seen in its entire beauty and not just a few flashy parts...

an example im tying to use to make myself more claer would be like brittney spears with a shaved head.

now as the years go by she matured into (well im not going to use the term here) a very attractive woman. but then when she shaved her head to try and look different, it messed up her entire appearance!

keep in mind her body was still banging...but by her changing one thing about her appearance...it made her look horrible.....

again, this is all just my personal opionion.....

bullshet! That color is nice. very well done. 5liter seems a little to anal in his reasoning, but thats OK. It looks damn good.

panpang,

am i safe to say he left the calipers on the car and did a mask job

I like the red to break up the black/chrome and think the splash of red of the tailights and calipers makes it look good. Beauty is subjective, but on this one someone thought at Porsche, Mercedes thought it look good and put them on their cars. That's the only thing I don't get about the argument that red can only go on certain cars.

Yes, the body shop just masked off the areas that didn't need painting and left the calipers on.

re-read my post sir-point-out-a-lot

i didn't say it looked bad....i said, "in my personal opinion" i think he shoudlve went with a different color

from websters dictionary: opinion : 1. (noun) opinion, sentiment, persuasion, view, thought a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty

and besides, at least my "opinions" have some thought to them and i like to share them. my mind isn't as half-baked or indolent as the statements you put into your answers.

.....thank you and please drive through

it's pretty simple actually; just ask yourself: when is the last time you saw a yellow camaro or a pink mercedes or a green porshe?

i believe cars are works of modern art and even though cars are cars for some people (i hate those people by the way), to me, someone sat there in a room, drawing and molding and sculpturing these machines almost from scratch; and then make them appealing to a certain mass of people.

now like everything else in life there is always room for improvement; hence why companies make body kits, lights, wheels etc.etc.

...the KEY is to match the right style, shape and COLOR to a car to improve on the original design and color....

proof? you ask?.....

well as of this moment 9:41am on 10/24/09 , approx. 148 people have viewed this thread and only 2 said good job....... (and one of them is clueless)

We agree to disagree on what's artistic/beautiful, that's why I went out and did it and you would never do it.

I don't need the validation of the whole community to be happy with the results, and I'm still happy with the results. When I woke up this morning and saw it, I'm still glad I did it.

Thanks for taking the time though...

And thats all that counts, as long as you like it, but I agree that the job you did and color choice you made was great. keep in mind that once you post pics for people to view....opinion will vary and some will be more anal and idiotic than others. lol you know what I mean

Oh man. Here I am, sitting on the sidelines for a change, in hand waiting for some more action. Is this all there is ?

Here, I'll say "GANGSTA" in hopes of moving this along...

PS I too like the red w/white lettering on the black machine.

Thanks antzrus first of all. Sorry, but in my line of work I manage large projects with 100+ people and confrontation/relationship management is key and something that I've had to learn over the years Also, my car would fail miserably to qualify for anything "GANGSTA"!

Oh geez, I just hate it when more rational people prevail and the evening's budding pugilists just fade out. Yeah, "GANGSTA" was just my last grasp hoping to agitate someone enough to rekindle the evening's fireworks.

Damn, I guess I'll have to switch over to the TV and watch WWE if I'm gonna' get any action tonight.

Nice job on the calipers though.

Heheheee, we all have our failures to communicate. This forum so reminds me of a family w/lots of sibs; w/so many mis perceptions about really absolutely nothing.

But then it's just a microcosm of the real world. Thank goodness most of us are endowed w/a humorous sense of the ab surd. Because so much of man's imperfect perception is...

Calipers look nice. Not my style....I prefer black, but then again, my car is diamond graphite. I already have an additional grill that I had painted black (left the emblem in chrome) and I am going to smoke the tails. Have the windows tinted to 15%, but thinking about going to 5% like I had on my SUV. I like contrast. I am definitely digging the emblems/logos you got on there. Good job.

none the less the write up is official but would of love pictures of the car acutally getting the work done then just showing the finish product..

I think I was going more for Sport than Tough, and for me Red implied sport. But we could go on a long discussion about colors, which of course, we know everyone's going to have a different view and not worth arguing over subjective opinion.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube such as this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3mhq_BrnU0

that show how to spray paint the calipers without removing them. That's what my guy did. He removed the wheels, taped up everything that he didn't want painted and did a bunch of light coats with the red paint can. Then after it dried put on the decals and then did 3 additional light coats of clear. That's all...

Very nice. I have plans to do this in three weeks. I have a similar plan. I like the decals - where did you get them on ebay? size of decals? did you apply decals following fifth coat of red? what was the exact color or red you used?

again, very nice!
