We actually didn't mask anything off at all...
I used a steel brush thoroughly on the caliper, inside and outside ring of the rotor. Sprayed CRC cleaner all over the brushed areas and let it evaporate. Then I took a rag and went over all of the cleaned areas with prep-sol. We then mixed up some paint with a catalyst in it and we BRUSHED the black on (no primer applied). I was kinda dumbfounded myself when we first started, but my dad has done this so many times with lasting results - I didn't question. The reason the brush works well is because all of the surfaces are a rough finish anyways, so the brush strokes cannot be seen if it is applied evenly. Tried to keep it on target as much as possible, and anything that wasn't we removed with a rag and paint thinner. To get the inside of the caliper the polished aluminum look, I used cue-tips and paint thinner very slowly and carefully. I basically traced the inside of it and removed all of the "over spray".
We did the front with the HID upgrade and it took an entire day start to finish, with pulling all the panels, running wires, heat shrink etc. This was also the first time that myself or my dad had worked on the car, so the learning curve slowed us down a bit. The next day we did the rear calipers in about 2-3 hours. So once you get in there and do the first I am guessing you can do all 4 in about 4-6 hours. I took an extra 2 hours or so to clean the front and backs of my rims thoroughly.
hope this helps....let me know if you have any more questions.
