Not to thread-jack here, but I'm curious- what's the average price is I should expect to pay for attempting a home paint job? The tools are mostly here, it would just be prep and paint materials.

Maaco, in my experience, is very unpredictable, and, I've tried the rattlecan route once on another car

Do you guys spray your own cars?

you're right, since you've seen it in person it came out great for rattle can, i don't know what you're smoking. the paint is still holding up fine even now that i treat it badly and kick dents into it

if you do your own prep work before hand they can turn out great.
Anyone care to remark on that? also why IS maaco so hit and miss? do they just have some professionals mixed with a couple of middle school drop outs?

I think its mainly because people go there and expect something great for three to four hundo and end up with something not so great.

Others are willing to pay up for a good job though.

I was considering prepping myself and having maaco or some other local shop do it. Just that way I know the prep was done well, I would just hope they clean it properly before hand.

just thought id throw a few pennys around... i just paid $81 for a pint of duPont for an 04 subaru sti... the same amount but from PPg would have cost me about $60... just for the paint, then you add the reducer at a ratio of 1:1...

Most of the time a gallon of paint will do a car (unreduced)... might need more if your doing the jambs and/or engine comp.

Reds are usually the most expensive...

then there are tri-coat paints which use a base, mid and then the top coat of clear... The 50th aniversarey corvette red tri coat is about $500 for the base then $500 for the mid coat..

i do side work at home and if you have a decent paint gun and some knowledge of painting, jobs will look great no matter what paint you decide to go with.

the compressor you use helps tremendously... more cfms meens more constant air... its no good to have an 80 gal comp. runing 135psi and only have 5 cfms going through the hose... my compressor at home is an IR 80 gal 5hp with 15 cfms at 90psi

HVLP guns are better becouse you use less presure to attomize the paint

i have never rattled a car befor but i've seen it done and for the cost eh..

any one else?

^ good info

its kinda funny, the place that painted my fc do mostly classic cars and muscles cars so the guy that paints is pretty old school. he doesn't use a "newfangled" hvlp gun. paint came out great though

I can not believe that no one has brought up the fact that he wants to spend less than $300 for base/clear? That will never happen with decent paint.

If you are expecting it to not be so amazing go get yourself some single stage paint and lay that crap down. Its like 1/4 of the cost to do base/clear. For example i have a gallon of a regular grey that i used for my interior and engine bay. 1 gallon cost me like $75. (yes i bought a gallon for other cars as well)

has anybody had experience with this type of cheaper paint or any paint below $100 a gallon. i just really dont feel like dropping $600 for all the primer, sealer, base coats and clearcoats.
A lil fyi... The clear coat on the Corvette ZR1 run roughly $60,000 a gallon...

Haha, $60,000 for the clear coat on a $105,000 car? That makes 0 sense.

300 to 400 is about average for a gallon of base. I wouldnt buy singlestage because it doesnt have very good longevity and if it ever gets wrecked you cant blend single stage paint. So you would have to color the whole panel and then its not gonna match. For materials on a base clear paint job will be around 500 - 600 most of the time. I use OMNI clear coat that seams to work fairly well and is easy for a beginner to spray. We ust PPG color though but its fairly exspensive. I know its hard not to do but dont cheap out on paint. It will look sweet at first but in a year it will loose its shine and scratch easy.
