car heats to normal temp at startup in 30 secs. Then when I start driving it overheats. replaced the water pump, added nismo thermostat. no smoke at idle only at WOT (white smoke). oil is fine, coolant is clear. fan blows but not as strong as it should be. (Permacool fan) It drives very smooth just overheats. I cant figure out why its overheating....its S13 Redtop

If it's reaching operating temp in only 30 seconds I'd say that your temp gauge is messed up or your gauge temp sensor is. What are you using to monitor the engine temp? Go ahead and replace the gauge and ECU temp sensors. You can find them at several of the sponsor sites, or check the parts guide in the forum to see which ones are compatible with the SR.

12 inch Permacool fan is too small, not moving enough air, what is the CFM rating 1200?

We use the 14 inch it pulls 2500+ CFM more than enough for most setups.

when i turn on my interior fan (no ac) the temp gauge jumps up on bar. turn it off it settles back down one bar.and when I let the turbo timer shut off the car the temp still reads HOT. 2 mins after it shuts off I turn the key to the "ON" position and the temp gauge reads below normal. WTcrap?

sorry its a 14" PermaCool fan from HeavyThrottle.com

Sounds like electrical issues to me. See my previous post.

When you say the car overheats, other than the temp gauge needle going up, does the car feel like its losing power and/or your rpms increase? When mine overheated I noticed that at idle my rpms jumped from 700 to 1800.

Hmmm.....have you done a compression check just to be sure??

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this but...the white smoke may mean your headgasket is letting some coolant slip into the combustion chamber (coolant burns, you get white smoke).

IF this was happening though, you would probably notice your coolant level dropping, and a loss of power....With the issues you are having, i'd just buy an aftermarket coolant temp gauge, then you don't have to deal with buying and installing parts you probably don't even need(+ the aftermarket gauge is more accurate) The gauge would be 1 wire running from the temp sensor, then 2 wires for power. simple as that.

Oh and i HIGHLY doubt your car is warmed up in 30 seconds, so you shouldn't drive it hard until after at least 5 mins of regular driving on cold starts (bad for HG)

I had this same problem on my SRthe redtop SR coolant temp sender uses a differant voltage skale then my S14 gauge cluster, the engine war running at perfect temp but was reading super hot on the factory gauge, I replaced the sensor and its been fine ever since,

for future referance

Black Smoke = too richBlue Smoke = burning oilGrey Smoke = buring oilWhite Smoke = buring coolant

I think you have an air bubble in your coolant system. When you put new coolant into your radiator you must bleed the coolant system..locate the 10mm bolt on the upper radiator hose "water neck" where it says "caution do not open when hot" Take out that bolt and thats how you let the air out..once coolant starts coming out and no air put the bolt back in and your overheating problem may be gone

i agree with sideways, I had that same problem in my S14, this is the culprit unless you car is an S13.

interesting..cool to know..i say you might as well try to bleed the system since that cost no money and if that doesnt work do what they said if you car is a s14 that is
