Okay, here is my cooling setup:Koyo Alum RadAltima Fans w/relay kit and thermo probe (the long skinny kind that you jab through the rad fins)OEM Rad Cap

So it seems that I think my gauge is awry. Here is the situation: On the hghwy it cools fine no probs, but driving around in the city after about 15 mins (est.) of stop and go traffic it starts climbing past the 3rd dash-mark on the temp gauge. Fans come on (they are suppose to come on at 185, but I don't have my digital water temp gauge installed) and shut off after a brief period of time but the gauge stays above the 3rd dash-mark and doesn't show anysigns that the fans did their job. While cold I checked the cooling system for air bubbles (by removing the 10mm nut on the water neck) and found the coolant to be right up to the brim. I also swapped out the coolant temp sensor and that changed nothing. Do I need a new thermostat? Oh and I do not lose any coolant....the overfill tank is always at the same level....HELP!!

is that the stock temp gauge? because it sucks and is notoriously inaccurate/slow. get an aftermarket one.

i also don't trust the thermos that you stick onto the radiators. there is no way those things are accurate.

if you want a quick answer, get one of those infrared thermometers and when your gauge says your overheating then hit radiator or the housings around where the water enters or leaves the engine.

Yeah stock temp gauge, I do have a digital water temp gauge not installed yet. The probe is the long skinny kind that you jab through the rad on the upper rad hose side. How else would I have my fans controlled, but I highly doubt that's the problem seens how my fans come on.

if you changed the temp sensor and you dont have air bubbles i would think it is the thermostat getting stuck..did this just happen after your replaced something or did something to your cooling system or it just randomly started?

The last thing I did (last month) was replacing that rubber hose(coolant line to turbo) and heater hoses that go behind the head. The funny thing is I drove it around yesterday and it showed no signs of going past the 3rd dash-mark. Also my radiator is warm (like normal) after driving it around sou that should mean that the thermostat is opening like it should. It was raining alot the day it started to do this, maybe that messed with a ground for my fans and gave them a hard time kicking over? It's just really weird...I only replaced the coolant temp sensor because I had an extra one laying around.

hmmm..well possibly the thermostat is working sometimes and getting stuck the other times causing it to over heat slightly..but also possibly just the rainy weather too like you said

IIRC they are both buy the TB as they sit right next to each other and the one on the left closest to the TB is for the ecu IIRC..but it could be the one on the right...that is if they are even next to each other

they are right next to each other, one is a one wire sensor, and one is a 2 wires sensor, I had to replace the gauge one on my car, but I dont remeber which it was

I replaced the ecu one on my KA years ago and i believe they were right next to each other pretty much the same as the SR's are..and i think the ecu one on the KA was on the left IIRC so im guessing the SR's would be on the left too
