You know what - the more I think about it, the more I think the thermostat stuck and it just took alot of heat load to make the stock gauge move and kill the block. Not really anybody's fault, just a defective part and the overheating wasn't caught in time.
My SR personally runs almost ridiculously cold. With a Koyo Rad, stock thermostat and GReddy oil pan the water temps stay at 175*F solid under cruising(measured at the outlet) and the oil temps drop to 120*F or BELOW(measured in the oil pan) with steady cruising in 70*F weather. I think the GReddy oil pan provides enough oil cooling to drop the oil to ridiculously low levels.
With the water temp, I've let the gauge go up to 210*F at idle before and the stock temp gauge NEVER moved a hair. One time without the fans wired up the temp went up high enough where the stock gauge started creeping up, but I started moving shortly after that so everything was fine. I'd say that by the time the stock gauge pegged at the H level, things are already WAY too hot.
Oh well - stupid stock temp gauges.
