Alright, It's time to face the music. My 180's engine gave up years ago. I pulled it and stuck it in storage with the intention to build something awesome to replace it. Ever have life happen to ya? Yeah, me too. I was well on my way, parts were being bought, NEW! Expensive machine work was being done up in mainland. Mad had not a lot of money, but for the first time in my life I actually was ahead of the game and had a couple hundred a month of genuinely disposable income. It was great. Then, I bought a house, the economy tanked and I had to make some quick moves to protect what wealth I had which drained what cash was left over after the down payment on the casa, and all the new payments going out had and still do leave me just getting by. I regret none of that, but it effectively killed the chances of getting the car back on the road any time soon.

Couple that with work getting seriously stupid, my new 50 mile per day commute, schoolwork and the like and not only did I not have money, I had no time or energy. The 180 languished with my other "projects," the RS, two bikes, the boat, various household projects. It's really sad and some of it is laziness on my part to be sure, but I was wore out from every perspective.

Some things have changed. Work has gotten less stupid! School is still kicking my a** and I'm still pretty much broke, but dammit I actually have a little time, a whole 20-foot container full of miscellaneous parts and the reduced stress is allowing my body to recoup and my brain to start sparking again. Today I took the first step. After submitting some schoolwork and staring out the sliding doors at the 180 sitting there on flat tires, rusting, sad, depending on my to make things right I got up, I grabbed my tools and I marched out in the hot a** weather to begin my journey.

Here we are. This is Pooh. I've had this car for about 13 years. It's is a 1989 180SX. This car is older than some of our members. Still better looking and smarter than a few too.

Image

It has been sideswiped twice, ironically when it was sitting still. The whole driver's side quarter panel was replaced after the second attack. I have bounced a kid off a scooter and across the nose before and the front spoiler has gone toe-to-toe with a few curbs. That's classic early 90s Bomex, back when they built stuff to last.

Image

The car has been loyal, I have been less than that. Even when the motor failed it just lost compression on #1. Nothing catastrophic and it took a T04E and close to 20 years of running to make that happen. The most use the car has been to me in the past years is as something to chain my bike to.

Image

The super cool motorcycle gas cap has started to cancer up. This will need to be redone, but not now, no money.

Image

There is some rust showing around the windshield. That will need some professional attention.

Image

The hood is looking ragged. The clear coat is fading and the edges are chipped from being opened and closed without hinges. They seized up and I will need to replace them. I would like to try mounting Cefiro hood struts too. The prop rod is so pedestrian.

Image

The hatch is s***. This is the second hatch this car has worn. I want a carbon fiber one, but I can't afford that. Black electrical tape will have to do for now.

Image

The car has also seen duty as a storage locker. to be honest, I don't even remember what's in there.

Image

The interior has fared decent. The carpet is old and I would like to replace it, but aesthetics are low on my priority list.

Image

At some point I picked these up. They are pretty long in the tooth and I would be surprised if they lasted long or worked well, but for now they are better than the struts on the car now which are completely and totally blown.

Image

My Recaro still has some life left in it! I wonder if my fatter than it used to be a** will still fit in it.

Image

The brakes are rusted to the point I think they are locked up. That's actually not that much of a problem. I have a set of Z32 and another set of R33 and two sets of R32 brakes. I have almost all the parts for the five lug swap and three sets of wheels I could use.

Image

The scene of the crime. This room has been quiet for years. I think it's high time we made some noise in here!

Image

It's quite filthy in here. I would like to strip it out, scrub it down and rattlecan it the same black as the outside.

Image

Both master cylinders are whiterusted and leaking. They need to be either overhauled or replaced.

Image
Image

That brake fluid leak has stripped the paint off the frame rail and rust is going to work. I don't think it's gotten worse than surface rust, but I won't know till I get in there and wire brush it. we will see.

Image

This rust concerns me. I see rust drop when I slam the door and I wonder if when I pull the fenders I will be confronted with serious kick panel rot.

Image

Both the Greddy radiator and the HKS intercooler are whiterusting and need a good scrubbing, but are still usable.

Image
Image

I pulled a lot of stuff out today, but that wiring harness snakes everywhere. I was just going to move it out of the way and paint and then put it back, but I think I convinced myself during the process "f*** THAT!" I am so tired of dealing with the rat's nest of OEM wiring I'm probably going to heat up the Visa and go with a painless harness and strip the factory wiring out of the car completely. I already have a Haltech to run the engine, I might as well take it all the way.

Image

Done for today. I should have at least one day next week to come at it again. I am hoping to pull the whole nose off and strip out the wiring, cut the brake lines back to the calipers and check the kick panels.

Image

Many of you have seen my grandiose ideas and lofty promises that I am never able to keep. I hate that, but there it is. I have gotten wiser over the years and while I still dream big I expect less. The goals here are pretty simple.

1. Try to stabilize any frame rot, if it requires pro help I'll have to come up with the scratch to cut out the bad metal. A stitch in time now should get the car down the road to a time and place where if I desire I can have it really gone through and restored. I've got the boat up for sale and fingers-crossed, that would be a big help to funding the work.

2. Get an engine, ANY f*** ENGINE in it and actually running. I don't give two s*** what it is or if it makes any kind of serious power. I am lucky that I have three potential mills I can throw together and any one of them would actually be pretty cool, but that's not what I care about. This car will run again if I have to, gulp, pay someone to do the work for me. Yeah, I'm that serious. f*** my ego, screw my silly ideas, I want my car running again!

Your comeback thread lit a fire under my a** this morning. Thank you for that! :dblthumb:

Man, that T04E had some balls. Ryan, you better be enjoying that thing! :poke:

It's funny, seeing that Bio had emailed me, trying to get logged into NICO, and then seeing his "comeback" thread, really got me motivated too. I've had all the parts to put the bottom end of the CA back together for at least a few weeks, and I just keep letting life get in the way. I decided this morning that I'm going to make time and get that car running again! I never really got to wind that T04E up and enjoy it, but that won't be for long!

Hahaha, glad to be an inspiration. Though if I get mine up and running again before spring it'll be a miracle, but mainly because I have other things I have to prioritize above getting the new car running, mostly house related stuff.

I wish I could cram and get it running before Nov since the inspection is good until then, but... that's not gonna happen! LOL

But I should have no trouble passing, the last time I inspected the old car, I passed with much better emissions than the old KA24E ever managed, thanks to finally tuning things just right. /flex

wow, that car is in sad shape! I'm always surprised at what tropical weather does to things

Don't bother stripping the rust... just sand it smooth and POR15 it, then primer/paint on top.... it won't ever come back
bio's 89 had the same problem... master cylinder was leaking at the end and rotted away the paint on the frame rail.... it looks like you will need to replace all of that junk on the firewall... go with tokico aftermarket, really good stuff from my experience... they made the OEM nissan stuff for some cars too :)

if you plan to have working A/C again, I suggest flushing out the heat exchangers and replace the oil.... no doubt being exposed to air for so long they're contaminated by now

I'm leaning this way. I like the idea of a clean firewall and going after those pedals under the dash really pissed me off.

I am another who needs to get off his duff and get his CA finished. DAmn motor was mounted to the AE86 and I covered the car and left it at that. I just don't have a "COOL" name for my car to call it from its hibernation.

So you are going CA? The FJ is back-burnered? You still looking for carbs? I was just creepin round yesterday and saw some sidedrafts tossed in the corner of the parts shop. They look cruddy as hell and didn't check the model or size, but the place is on my way home from work so I can easily go back and check.

Good luck with the resurrection. I hate to say it, but you won't rise-up as fast as you would like to because you've been down too long to and you are now disoriented and need counseling. You'll also need some viagra or caragra to get it up again as your youthful testostorone or testarosasone has deminished and you'll need that boost-up :naughty:. I'm sort of experiencing the same thing, but three of my cars actually run (x2 CA powered S13s and a B12 sentra with CA). Spending money on home remodeling, building other folks' dreams to make the money to pay for said home remodeling and just having too much CA junk can be a boner-killer. So make sure you be ginger with pooh as it seems to be very delicate and brittle. Geritol or SSS tonic will be a good start. Stay thirsty my friend :rotfl

I need some plugs man, stuffs thinning like crazy. Years of dragging my quivering fingers angrily through my hair as people around me do stupid crap has pushed my hairline closer to the back of my grape.

I need a two-fer deal, rust repair and hair plugs. I'd look suave with my hair roots all lined up like a doll's head.

SCORE! I picked up another HKS T04E kit! :dblthumb:

I walked into an out of the way place I haven't been to in a year or more and I actually had enough money on me to make the buy. The turbo needs an overhaul, but it looks like it's just leaking seals so I'm going to do it myself.

Don't even start on hairlines and hair plugs because that conversation would be endless. It's extremely funny because the old saying "If it ain't one thing, it's another" seem to be the theme for the CA18 old timers and has definitely affected the younger generation as well.
Some of us have the parts, but no knowledge
Some of us have the money, but no time.
Some of us have the time, but no money.
Some of us have the parts, time, but lack the needed knowledge.
Some of have the knowledge, parts, time, desire, but lack the needed funds.
Some of us have the money, the parts, the knowledge, but lack the fire to want to complete any projects.
Some of us are losing hair, getting fat, car doesn't run well, lazy, lost and confused.
Some of are just plain lost and shouldn't have never bought a CA18DET.
Some of us are cheap as hell, but expect to get 500hp out of their JDM swap fresh from the importer (NOT).
Some of us have CA18DET swap that never ran correctly and probably never will.
Some of us will sell our CA18DET swap and go buy another engine set or even swap back to the KA platform (fail)
Some of us will sell the whole project due to lack of funds, lack of interest or failure to make the most of the swap.
Some of us just need to leave this crap alone and go buy a Prius or something hybridish.

Whichever one of these statements pertain to you, remember this quote from the late, but great Michael Jackson [You are not alone]. Feel free to grab one of these statements and add it to your signature, so that members can know your situation almost immediately :rotfl

You forgot one: Some of us have plenty of parts some money a handle of vodka too much time $5K of driveline and transmission parts laying on the floor in their bedroom and an angry girlfriend and no lift to make swapping a clutch in any fun:) lol :gapteeth:

Or

Some of us have their 3rd restoration process and realize that if they had just stopped and sold it they would be rich!
(and maybe a few hair left before the plugs come in :rotfl )

But then again I think most of us are here with the CA because as much as the engine is a glutton for punishment so are we !
