I dont let SCC or any magazine for that matter tell me what drifting is. I have drifted with an open differential, you can do it, its just harder then with a LSD. RWD is just the *optimal* drivetrain layout for drifting, it is in no way exclusive.

Hm... I don't like quoting myself... But maybe you should read the whole thing rather than just between the lines.

Oops~ my bad. But yea, drifting is not and never will be a RWD or 4WD car exclusives. Not to say it's ok for some FWD ppl to go out and try it. It takes a whole lot more to drift a FWD than that of RWD or 4WD. If this is hard to understand, then don't try.

im not into drifting at all, i was reading SCC's article on making their s13 pull 1.0g on a skidpad...maybe i just read what they were saying wrong, does anyone else know the specifics of a 1.5way lsd? thanks

edit: oops, ill just read through that article you posted, thanks =)

I would have to say that while open-diffed drifting is harder, it is quite possible. I have been driving my 95 for over a year and started out by fishtailing in the rain. that lead to my open parking lot practice runs to actually drifting a corner. While i dont believe I have done a full 4wheel drift, I am positive I have executed many extended fishtails if you will. Then my brother got a 90 300z, and good god what a difference that lsd made. just by driving and practicing in his car I was able to learn so much that I now feel 100 times more confident in my opendif drifting. So yes, it can and has been done.

Ok, well i've been doing a couple of drifts in my car for a while nothing crazy, the most i've ever gone around a corner is 40-45mph, and i had to do it on a biggg road to, dont want to harm anyone are your car. So i was just wondering how fast you guys take your turns at?

4 wheel drifts are possible with open diffs, just incredibly hard.

I can do it.... sometimes.

i thought a true four wheel drift was only possible in AWD cars? how do you control your car when the front wheels dont have traction?

4 wheel drift only means all 4 wheels are in the state of a drift. If you think in terms of that, then it's possible... In all platforms, which is why I mentioned earlier that drifting is not and never will be a RWD/4WD/AWD exclusives. You CAN do it in FF platform. Just much more difficult. When you understand weight shift, then you'll understand how 4 wheel drift is done. Example: D1 drifting. If you observe their line as far as drifting goes, you'll notice they actually start their drift way early. When weight shift is induced correctly, the momentum of the car will remain. However, car WILL be sideways. Which is also how high speed drift is achieved.

I drift around some mtn corners...but im not nearly good at all. However, i have a 92 FB and I can give you some tips I discovered last time I went that some friends said my drift looked sick as helll...felt good too. If its a 90 degree corner(or like 120ish)...I usually wait till about 15ft before the apex, then slam the brakes(not too hard...no ABS! hehe) so I shift the weight to the front...then I turn in very quick to the corner and simultaneously clutch-in and E-Brake(pull up like 3/4 really fast and let it back down)...also with the turn-in...dont turn in too much...otherwise you'll spin out(oversteer)...just make a quick turn...but not too sharp so you can get some inertia on your side. then countersteer and slowly gas it out till you feel a little in control and your good to go. Hope this helps!-Galen

EDIT: Emphasis on SLOWLY gas it out. I notice my friend(95 Zenki) who is much better than me, spins out because hes flooring it. You need to gradually press the gas when exiting otherwise the force from gas'n it will spin you out as well....Just practice!

Weight shift, weight shift, weight shift. Thats how i do it. I also like to initiate the loss of rear traction with a jolt to the drive train by popping the clutch sometimes, but usually I can get it by just shifting the weight forward. Get to know your car and slowly push it. If you can learn how to "listen" to what the car is telling you, you can make it do anything. I'm by no means a drift king, but I think I can pull out a drift the way I want it to go about 75% of the time. Something else to remember is that everytime you mod your car, you will have to re-learn the vehicle. I know that it will be very hard for me to go from controlling a NA vehicle to a forced induction vehicle. I've been so used to linear power curves that it will almost be like starting from scratch. Be patient, be smart, and be careful!

yea all that open crap. Heres my opinion on it from driving an open diff. The adv. Ive seen so far and felt(when driving with a guy w/ VLSD) is that it grips better later. So you can take a turn real damn fast and then slide out and punch it, and not spin out. With no-lsd You kind of have to use physics to swing your car around the corner. You cant just floor it mid-way. It's more of an art; at least how I see it. If I sell this damn blacktop clip soon I can get my coils and 2-way Lsd, so I can give you better perspective. But if you dont have lsd, the key is just throttle control mostly...cuz if u floor it mid-way u'll just do a spin or two. Just slowly push in the gas so your tires have some time to regrip. Yea I'm done talking now. Good luck guys!-Galen

EDIT: Where'd my sig go?
