It is, but many people don't quantify the cost difference with the frequent oil changes.

Then again your strongest dyno oil can be better than your worse synthetic. However if you buy a quality syn. you can't beat the package.

the thing with going synthetic is the heat resistance. You're not going to see how much coking of the oil that will come from running dyno oil for a while, but I can guarantee that there is probably some buildup in the turbo.

For a turbo application its pretty hard to beat a syn..Summer or Winter..

Any Car - Yes Synthetic

Turbo Car - Synthetic 15W 50

If you can afford it - HKS Super Turbo Racing Oil 15W-50. If not Mobil 1 is fine.lateDaryl

Actually no unless its winter, freezing where you are, and you never run you car hot...actually it is the only weight the HKS oil for Turbo APS is sold over here....additionally, its the only weight of mobil 1 that is sold on or off base. Everyone I know which includes every SR powered car, and RB Powered Cars all run 15w-50. I have been running it as long as I have had the car..lateDaryl

i prefer redline. if you cant afford a synthetic you may consider a motorcycle oil as they all have zddp afaik.

Look on Se-r.net some ofg the guys there have done 100K+ and track racing too with 5W30 and still found honing marks when stripping down.

Hone marks are on the piston bores, they are the criss-cross pattern grooves that hold an oil film (ultra thin..) to keep the friction down on the up/down stuffs (pistons, rings).

That means the engines are experencing little internal cylinder wear (high friction will remove metal from the walls, scraping off the hone marks) with the 5w 30 oil.

I cannot stress enough how important using a synthetic oil is. Synthetic's virtually eliminate the threat of coked turbo bearings because the elements that cause coking are barely present in synthetics. Also, I'd stay away from Castrol products. I worked as an intern with Shell Corporation, and did a bunch of studies and such on other oil companies business practices. castrol has a bad reputation for being a CHEAP manufacturer. They don't pump their own dino oil, they buy their oil from whoever is selling it the cheapest. This makes it hard for them to really maintain a quality product. They also buy the ingredients for their synthetics in the same manner. Mobil on the other hand pumps their own oil, refines their own oil, and then sells it, so they actually control the entire process involved with their product. I would recommend using Mobil 1 synthetics without any second thought. I personally shy away from "Racing Oils" because they're meant for...well...racing. They may be able to tolerate higher heat levels, but they also aren't meant for putting around town and such. I remember reading an article about Racing Oils tending to be very ineffective for regular street driving. use Mobil 1 most of the time, and toss in the racing oils whenever you have a track day. That's what I would do

I finally put 10w30 mobil 1 in my SR this evening after running a couple short "flushout" dyno oil changes after my swap.

I noticed the motor had a new high pitched metallic sound to it. Drove into town and it went away ::shrug::

p.s. K&N filters on a filter relocate kit are the PWNZ!. since they have an anti-drainback valve the filter stays filled with oil instead of draining back down to the pan, this means oil pressure builds instantly like it should instead of having the valvetrane run dry for a second.
