Well they were a little too far for my car what with its rod knock and low oil pressure. In the shop's defense, this was an eBay engine that I had not fully tested. I wonder how hard it would be to set something up so the engine could be run outside the car. It seems most of the wrecking yard engines have already been taken out and therefore can't be fully tested. Also most of them just do a compression check. Sure would make finding any problems before too late a lot easier. I think I'd almost be willing to install one myself if I had such a setup. If the next engine doesn't work this car is going to the crusher.

Your best bet to find a bench set-up would be to check out your local community colleges or tech/trade schools. Auto programs will always have a set-up like that, but they're usually fairly permanent. See if they have an unused stand. Needs to have engine management and cooling, and have compatible injector/sensor connectors, or use your ECU with another harness. Probably a tall order either way. Talk to the shop instructor--could be a mutually beneficial arrangement. Students get credit and you get work done for free or for a nominal fixed fee.
