Oil dipstick not showing oil's level, need help!

I have a 92 HB and just the other day when I went to check my oil's condition like I always do, I pull out the oil dipstick, cleaned the oil on it, then put it back and then pulled it out again, but then for some reason it doens't pick up any oil, the stick was clean, like as if there was no oil in the engine, I KNOW there is though because the engine doesn't knock or anything, I was wondering if anyone has this problem and if so please help me out, please narrow down what could possibly be wrong, also what other info I need.

please be more specific, what do you mean, what part is worn out, the end of the tip?, but when I looked at the tip, there is the indicator line, from H to L and up to the L I had around 2-3 inches left , but also at the end the dipstick is not straight flat out, it curves like a U shape could this be the problem?, I don't think the dipstick is wearing out because I see no sign of detioration.

It also IS possible that the engine is low on oil. Try adding about a half a quart and checking it again.

I work at Jiffy Lube and everyday we get in cars that show no oil on the stick and the engine seems to be running fine, no knocking or anything.

Your most likely problem is low oil.

Golly, do you think that could be it?

Molecular degeneration of the dipstick seemed like the obvious answer. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check if it's just a quart or two low, though.

OMFG...... K-car, your sarcastic wit never ceases to amaze me! You almost sold me on the molecular degradation thing. I was about to go out and measeure to check for a decrease in engine displacement.

Wow I just realized I got fuked like a foo.....once bitten twice shy....if you read the first post I posted it said..."I KNOW it's not the oil level itself, therefore I know it's not a problem" and K car....what do you get from being a sarcastic unhelpful person, maybe that's why you have so many posts, fuking sittin around all day reading this forum and thinkin of stupid **** to make it harder on people, honestly if I was moderator you will be out of this forum and have to run to zylvia.net

and K car, what I meant in my post is I KNOW I have enough oil in my engine, either that or theres some way my car is burning up the oil that I don't know about:

1. I don't see any oil stains in my driveway2. I don't see any leaks around my gasket3. or any other part of the engine bay that I see....

so before you assume I don't know how I take care of my car, please don't answer to questions you don't know the answers to, a simple I don't know would be fine, maybe I one day when you know enough you can truly earned those post numbers, not by answering people with stupid sarcasm to confuse them more, the reason why I was so quick to believe was I really want an answer to my problem. Not having any idea what it was, I believed your michael jackson self.

Burning oil would imply comsumption, the engine would literally be 'burning' off your oil. None of these symptoms would neseccarily have to occur for you to be losing oil in this way.

try this.....drain you oil....refer to the FSM....pour the correct amount of oil in the motor SO YOU KNOW it has the right amount...then check it...that would be the best way of trouble shooting the problem to me..ya know...if you fill it the correct amount, and the dipstick shows not the full line, then the point it is at is the new full line..if you follow what im saying.
