I did a loooooot of research, and though I didn't find a RIGHT way about engine break in, I did find an average streak of info. Everyone recommended oil changes right after engine breaks in - break periods were discussed from 500 to 5000 miles... but majority were between 500 to 1800 miles. Everyone recommended synthetic. Hope this helps...
Break-In Schedule for your 2008 Altima is listed on Page 5-19 of your owners manual.I have copied and pasted it below:

CAUTIONDuring the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km),follow these recommendations to obtainmaximum engine performance and ensurethe future reliability and economy ofyour new vehicle. Failure to follow theserecommendations may result in shortenedengine life and reduced engineperformance.

I am now ready for the first oil change on my 3.5 SE Premium Coupe.

It has now 10,000km (6,000 miles). I am going to take it to the Quickie Lube place where they advertise oil/filter change for $19.95.

The conversation is going to go like this.

ME: "I would like the special $19.95 oil and filter change deal"

OIL GUY "But that is for the recycle oil, you need Valvoline or Quaker State and it is $35.95".

ME: "Put in the recycle stuff, I am OK with it"

OIL GUY" You have a new car...I would not recommend the special deal stuff...it is recycled"..

ME: "go ahead and put it in..the recycle stuff"

OIL GUY" "You need Quaker State or Valvoline"

ME: "Don't you trust the products you sell...are you saying you are selling Junk oil and you don't trust it?"

OIL GUY " No, the recycle oil meets all the spec, but you should use Valvoline or Quaker state".

ME: "Go ahead and put the Valvoline or Quaker state in, if you want, but I am only paying $19.95"

OIL GUY" &$^%#(#(...OK, I'll put in the Valvoline for $19.95"

Well, I just came back from the oil and filter change at the Quikie Lube place.

The Recycle stuff only comes in 10W30. Just before I pull into the Quike Lube, I check the owner manual, and it said to use 5W30.

I end up getting Valvoline 5W30 for $24.95....a tad more than the $19.95 special....
