I was talking to a friend the other day about my new car, and he suggested I do an oil change after just 1,000 kilometres. He says that will flush out any tiny metal fragments left in the engine from the manufacturing process. Is he smoking something or is this sound advice? have any of you done this with your new vehicles?

I think it's sound advice, but to that I'd ask what your owner's manual suggests.

Hello,

The maintenance manual says that the first oil change has to be made at the 1000km mark.

After that the maintenance has to be made every 5000km.

I would think that the engines are cleaned after casting. Metal particles that are large enough will be caught by the filter. Microscopic particles won't be caught, but they are so small that they easily fit in the thin layer of oil. I didn't follow the manual. I changed the oil almost immediately then again at 3k. To be safe, follow what the manual says. BTW: I'm no expert.

I've always done this with motorcycles that share the engine oil with the transmission. It makes sense with a 600cc engien that makes 115HP and revs to 15,000RPM. On a passenger car that makes only 10 more HP from an engine 3 times the size capable of only 6500RPM, ... I'm not very concerned. It's a waste of time and money.

I agree with motoguy; I have 2900 miles on the original oil, and plan on getting it done this week. With todays' manufacturing nd engineering, the higher oil quality and filter designs, I see no reason to change the oil so early on. Besides, not changing it immediately will help the engine break in faster (theoretically). I would NOT go with the manuals' recommendation of 3400 miles, but do it at 3k and you'll be alright.

There was a discussion a while ago about the truths about break ins. In that topic I posted a link about that described myths and truths about the break in period.
