The headlights in my Volvo. Why? Because even if you turn the switch to off, THEY STAY ON! There's no photosensor that turns them on automatically at night, they're simply stuck on all day. It teases you with the switch, giving you the false impression of control over your lighting, but no matter what you do, your lights will be on.

Its exceptionally annoying because when I park at night I don't want my headlights to shine on my neighbors' bedroom windows when I'm pulling in. And what if I have a low battery and need a tiny bit more juice to start and get home? Too bad, the headlights stay on. I have to pay the dealer to disable this idiocy. The Escalade was the same way, but at least it used a photo sensor to keep the lights off during the day.

Also, if you use your brights during the day, how the hell do you flash people? (Other than dropping your pants)

I think we should outlaw them all and mandate people stay home at night.

I <3 you!!!

Seriously though, that person is retarded.

When it comes to light, the more the better! As long as it is properly placed, of course.

HID retrofits are nasty and should be banned completely. Proper HIDs with optics are the shiznit!

What I don't understand is why does GM continue to use crappy bulbs like the 9006 in the low beams when the H11 is available!

Or hell, the 9012/HIR2 would be effing amazing!!!

But no, they stick with outdated and unoptimized bulb designs.

Oh, don't even get me started on the 9007s!!! 1000/1350 lumens of pure compromised light output baby!

MinisterofDOOM wrote:I didn't say you said that. I have been talking abou HID DRLs from the start. Many cars that use primary headlights as DRL have HIDs. I am specifically talking about them. All Canadian Nissans are this way, for instance.
My apologies. You made no clear indication that you were limiting your points to HID systems and the points you made can apply to incandescent systems just as easily. But do tell which models use HIDs in lower wattage configuration for DRLs, as I did not find anything to confirm this was the case in a broad search for Nissans. In fact, I found some discussion that seemed to indicate the 370Z uses a separate light within the same housing. Couldn't find anything too specific. But I looked over the description for the 2010 Maxima in the FSM and the DRL's run off the high beams with half the wattage. From my searches, it would appear most DRL's using shared components do this by running both high beams in series which would easily half the voltage to each bulb. I would contend that for the reasons you stated above and others, I don't think any OE uses an HID system that lowers the voltage to the capsules. My understanding is that they run at about 80-90 volts through a square AC sine wave. The minimum appears to be 70 volts, which means they are targeting the minimum voltage with a little margin for error. If an OE would use an HID system for DRL's its probably going to be done at full power.
MinisterofDOOM wrote:Didn't say cheaper. Said more effective.
In the same sentence, you also said cheap.
MinisterofDOOM wrote:There's no difference in safety between dedicated DRL and shared lamps.

Also, if I buy a car with DRL, it'll be a lot easier to disable them when they're separate.
Agreed on the difference in safety. From that 2010 Maxima FSM, it might be easily disabled by pulling the DRL relay which is separate. I didn't review the wiring diagram to confirm and this might not apply to other vehicles. And of course, who knows if that will trigger some kind of an error code or not...

If you want to be a queer and leave your lights on all day, go for it.

Agreed. Hell, I ride a motorcycle with a constant full power low beam. I am considering putting a switch on the ground leg to turn it off when I ride during the day.

I'm using Ultravisions that only get like a 200~300 lifespan anyways. I don't want that wasted during the day!

IMO I wouldnt classify them (bmw, audi) as parking lights, because they do what DRL's are meant to do, and thats "notifying" other drivers that the car is "on" .

Every car should have a set of these. They should also have 2000-watt stereos with speakers on the outside playing Ace of Base at full blast so pedestrians can see and hear you coming.

I already e-mailed my idea to Nancy Pelosi.

Actually, since you mention that, I think it's actually possible to disable the 2010 Maxima (and most other new Nissans) DRLs through the "settings" menu accessible through the info screen. It might require a dealer, but IIRC you just need to know how to get to the right menu for it. Which is great, and if every automaker offered an easy-to-access (don't have to pay a dealer) option to disable DRL, I'd be fine with them coming stock on every car.

Entirely untrue. PMQ often makes my day. Whenever I'm having a crappy day and see one of his posts, I know that my life could be a lot worse. I could be him. Much the same reason I love watching Cops.
