This may be wrong, but wouldn't the shape and size and all that of the intake manifold itself have a lot of influence on sound. If what s13sr20chris said is right, which it seems reasonable, then a Honda intake, which is more a straight shot if they are all like my brother's accord, would surely allow more sound transfer than the almost "c" shaped intake runners of the Nissan's if they are all like my 240 with a KA24DE. The sound would have to curve around almost 180 degrees causing many of the sound waves to be bounced around and lost in the intake runner. Also since the intake tube itself crosses completely across the engine bay some more sound could be lost. Personnally, I think my 240 at full throttle sounds way awesome. A car should sound powerful not weak and annoying. And more displacement does make a car louder, more displacement= more air+more fuel= bigger and deeper sound. The human ear is more receptive of higher freaquency sound than lower also.

If you have ever heard the engine of awell tuned s2000 or NSX you would not belive that its a honda. I have also heard a really nice sounding accord. I dont know what they did to it but it sounded like a Mustang 5.0 I was amazed. Heres my deal...I had an integra for 3 1/2 years It was really loud..I was one of the first people in my town to do the performace import thing. One of the main reasons i wanted to get rid of it was cause it was so noisy!!!! I had always wanted a 240 but couldnt afford one...but now I have my 240 and am planning to eventually drop an rb25det in it...I want that thing to e low toned and quite...untill I open her up all the way. I just cant stand cars that sound like they are doing 100mph when they are actually going about 25

Saturns are extremly loud with the intake removed. And that is only the 1.9 liter. The DOHC and the SOHC sound the same. I think it has to do with how the idle control is set up.

Intake sounds and volume depend on the shape of the intake tube, the amount of available cone space, and the type of cone filter. Honda pipes seem to resonate at a more desireable frequency due to their design. The rpm that the frequencyworks best seems to match with the honda type engines. I'd have to disagree when it comes to sound. A 2.4L nissan engine has a little more growl then most honda and most mazda engines...
