Alright so this is my first post, and I am in need of some help. So recently i picked up a 95 j30 with 102k on the odometer for 125 bucks. The clutch fan went and took most of the cooling system with it. So i went to a yard and got all my parts. Put them all in and while i was at it i actually did a dual electric fan conversion. Not a fan of the clutch ones(ha get it? because its a fan...kinda sad). But all in all i spent about $150 in parts. Fixed it all and and it drove great, backed it out of the shop and around the lot. Then of course (like a dummy) proceeded to hoon around in it around the snow covered parking lot. Couldn't resist the snow and rwd combination..anyways went back to the shop to finish up some stuff and realized afterwards I no longer had reverse..it drives fine forward as far as i can tell, but the kicker is all the forward gears work, but if i put it in neutral it acts like drive or 3(not sure which it is for sure) and goes forward. Reverse does nothing but sit there, the button on the knob doesnt even popup. In order to move the car backwards i have to put the car in reverse and turn it off so it will roll. Park seems normal as well. Don't know if i messed something up? Car seems to be in really good shape..any help would be great! Thanks

Appreciate the quick reply! But on mine i can even seem to get it in reverse at all. no matter what i'm doing. I don't know if that would make it different from the other thread you linked?

Take apart the transmission shifter linkage, there is a a thing that looks like a heavy duty rubber band. If memory serves me correctly (this happened aroound 2003ish), it's called a "transmission clip". They're known to disintegrate with age. One day my J wouldn't go into reverse, but could go into all the other gears. The transmission shifted fine. This was the culprit,
