Ok so i want my car to sound MEAN (even though its not). So, i'm wanting to get an aftermarket exhaust. My question is, if i just replace the muffler, will i get the same sound as if i put in a cat back or axle back? Again, i'm not focused on performance, i just want the sound. Is the muffler sufficient?

it can make a difference. I suggest that whatever you do, if' you're going for the mean sound, don't get a canister style muffler. get a good quality oval muffler. you can get a universal oval magnaflow or borla and achieve what you want. i would also suggest changing out the resonator at the same time. The stock res sounds horrible and it's heavy as balls.

so just to be clear, since all i'm doing is changing the sound, it would be pointless to get a cat or axle back exhaust right?
Also about the resonator.. i hear i could just remove it instead of changing it. would that be advised?

If you are going just for sound, and going as cheaply as possibly, you can get just a different muffler.

Hell, if you REALLY want to go cheap, just cut the muffler off and clamp/weld on a straight pipe where it used to be. Shouldn't cos you more than $60.

Wow.

Lots of questions - Let me see if I can help (I've been building custom exhausts for over 8 years, so hopefully I can do this one justice):

Let's start with a typical exhaust system. It's comprised of the header, a downpipe, a catalytic converter, a length of pipe, a resonator (usually), another length of pipe, a muffler, a tailpipe, and a tip.

As you move from the engine back, the influence of each part on sound is decreased. The tip? Does nothing. :) A header makes a big difference (cast-iron stock manifolds are good for absorbing sound).

Read the first post in this thread, it's helpful: new-exhaust-for-the-s13-s14-240sx-t48608.html

There's no "quickie" way to achieve your goal without sacrificing something (performance, usually). Cutting out the resonator isn't ideal because it uses reflected sound waves to cancel out certain frequencies (ever hear a Honda with a fartcan? That high, raspy sound is the result).

Lopping off the muffler to replace it also isn't ideal. Whatever you install may not be designed to work nicely with what you already have.

The stock systems on most cars are designed NOT for performance, but to do their job, which is keep the car quiet. Most have sharp bends (which disrupt flow) and less-than-optimal muffler designs (which also impedes flow).

Getting a full catback is the only way to make sure you get something that increases power AND gives you the sound you're seeking.

Hope this helps.

^^^as he said, you usually dont get what you want just by replacing stuff. I think that the only catback for the 2.0 is stillen but i could be wrong on that. Custom is the cheapest way to go, but make sure you get someone that knows what they are doing. Just remember that bigger diameter and less stuff=louder. Which can be good and bad.

Also, getting a good intake can make a huge difference in sound. I highly recommend this as long as it is not a universal one.

All correct. :yesnod

We're working on our 2.0 system right now (almost finished), but will need approximately 20 more interested parties (since the jig to build them is almost $1K).
