Hey hi hello! Long-time browser of the 240sx tech pages, I finally decided to actually join here. As the new girl, I figured an introduction would be appropriate. So I'll tell you about myself and my car. I've been into cars my whole life, and love driving just for the sake of driving. I grew up driving go-karts (since I was like 6 or so), and continued growing up playing driving video games. Got my license as soon as I turned 16. Learned to drive at the hub of I-95, I-75, and I-595 in Fort Lauderdale. Fun times. But it's only been the last several years that I actually got into modding and tuning and stuff. I used to be a mechanic, though as far as I'm concerned that just made me a parts-changer, not actually a tuner. I'm still pretty ignorant when it comes to actual engine tuning, fuel management, ignition timing, etc. Settings. Like Tom Cruise from Days of Thunder. I know what I *want* the car to do / be like / feel like, but not a damn clue what to do to what in what way to make that happen.

So! One of my favorite movies growing up was Mad Max, and to this day it is still my quintessential car movie memory. So of course I had to build my own "interceptor". Something heavy enough to be stable at high speeds but light enough to still stop and turn well, tight suspension, quick acceleration. Once upon a time, I had wanted to get an old FHP Mustang. I really liked the way they looked, and they had the right look. And then I discovered imports. Turbocharged engines half the size of a V8 making similar power. And Nissans. I loved the Z cars from the start, and still like them greatly. From there I learned of the 240SX, with it's nearly identical indi rear suspension. And of course from there I discovered the S13 Silvia, and instantly noticed, hey, that has alotta the same lines as the FHP stangs (long hood, squareish body / headlights / taillights, etc), only it's smaller, lighter, and has a superior suspension. Sold. I found myself in the market for a 240SX coupe.

So I eventually found a 1993 240SX SE coupe, 5-speed, non-abs / hicas / vlsd, power everything and sunroof (and sunroof rust), that I picked up for $2k. It had been badly neglected, but never raced or wrecked, with 150,xxx miles. Perfect.

Image

Naturally, the first thing I did was cut my springs. HA! Yeah right. The first thing I did was savagely beat it with some basic maintenance. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil & filter, air filter, water pump, 3" aluminium radiator, silicone upper and lower hoses, etc. After that what mainly needed attention was the suspension. The (every) bushing and the (every) ball joint on the (every) arm was completely worn torn and otherwise useless. Everything rattled or clunked constantly, and cornering felt like driving a tub of water. So I replaced (everything). I'm all about stability.

Got a hold of some solid subframe bushings and a subframe that already had the OEM bushings removed. Did the whole thing in one shot.

Later I got Suspension Techniques front and rear sway bars. Never took pics cos, well, they're sway bars. The car handled SO much better after everything got installed. Sat nicer, too. I've been told by a few people that like this, she looks kinda like Karr from the original Knight Rider. It's especially funny cos she is definitely an evil car.
Image
Image

While I was doing all that I also did wome interior work. Replaced alot of the oem gray tweed, painted some things to match, got a new floor carpet, cleaned it up in general, did some stereo work.

I like purple.

Later did the Silvia conversion to her. Much more the look I was going for. Replaced the projectors with usdm spec 6K bi-xenon projectors for street legal cutoff. Replaced both low beams AND both hi beams with bi-xenons, so I have 4 low beams that become 4 high beams. Because lumens (family tradition). Only thing is, now with the new front end, and NO "Nissan" logos on her anywhere, people keep thinking she's an old Prelude :wtf2: NO. Just, no. Things to buy: NISSAN badge for grill and trunk.
Image
Image

Then I found some decent 17 x 7.5 wheels with good tires for less than it would have cost to replace my worn tires. May eventually switch up to some 17 x 9's down the road. They're better than the oem wheels in the meantime though...
Image

And most recently I picked up one of these. RB25DET S2 w/ ~ 45,000 mi.
Image

Compression tested 175+ on all 6 cylinders. Turbo was blown (MASSIVE play on every axis), pouring oil into the housing. Otherwise the engine looks to be in good shape. First odd thing I noticed was that it had aftermarket vacuum tubing T'd onto the intake FPR line. Second was that the turbo was not a S2 RB turbo (it was metal not nylon). Much to my surprise when I pulled the timing cover off I found an N-1 water pump bolted in place. I'm wondering what else I might find. It seems as though the engine was not just raced, but built for racing, by someone who could throw money at it to do things right, rather than just abuse it. The compression was great, so it doesn't look like the engine was fried beyond the turbo. I took the valve covers off and it looked brand new underneath. Right now I'm in the process of peeling open the crank case so I can see whats going on in there. And thats basically where I am now. Not yet 100% certain of how I'm going to build up the engine, mainly because I'm not 100% certain of exactly how much power I think I'm going to want, though I am pretty certain at least 300-350hp.

Aside from that the suspension still needs some attention, chassis still needs some bracing, and I'm going to put Z32 front and rear brakes on her. Later on a 1.5 LSD, maybe go 5 lug and change the rims with it, maybe upgrade the axles. Body needs paint and some rust repair, the chop-shop 2-tone look drives me crazy. just going to re-do her in solid gloss black. And a pink pinstripe. Gotta keep the pink pinstripe. I want to keep her reasonably stock looking, but I dont like how the oem silvia bumper barely covers a fmic. And I can buy a whole kit for the cost of what most people seem to be asking for an oem silvia aero bumper. The only kits I personally like at all are the v-speed and supermade style ones. So I'm not sure whether I should try to make the stock look work, or to say screw it and tack a v-speed kit with widebody fenders onto her with a matching stance, or something in the middle, or what. My failsafe plan is "stock".

And that's where Ive been, where I am, and where I'm going. Sorry that was so long, but I had alot to cover, I guess. Anyway, happy to be here, and looking forward to hearing from people

Thx for the welcome  I'm glad you like what I've done so far. I'm excited to see where she goes next, too. Even I'm not always 100% sure of what I'm going to do until I'm doing it lol. I can't guarantee less purple. But I can guarentee more of everything else :dblthumb:.

Well, by a strange twist of fate, I've found myself in posession of a bunch of free parts :woot: . FMIC, walbro 255 fuel pump, greddy RZ bov w/ recirc fitting, aeromotive FPR, AEM wideband AFR kit, boost gauge, hallman manual remote boost controller, and a few other random fiddly-bits. Yay fewer things to buy!

Some of the other things I DO still need to get are a freddy intake, RB25 NEO turbo unit, oem gasket set, clutch kit, timing components, WS RB into s13 harness, conversion engine mounts, and get a driveshaft made. Beyond that, I'm still up in the air as to details. Hopefully I'll be able to mess with the RB some more over the weekend.

In the meantime, here's one of my fav pix of my car.

Motor looks super clean, great pick up on that. , Purple is cool, not feeling the suspension parts tho, but I like the work your doing overall minus the system.

I remember having to take measurements because the trans was slightly longer than a typical SR/KA. We had to modify the trans mount bracket to work as well.

If I may ask, what about the suspension and system is it that you do not care for?

@Hijacker, I'll check shaftmasters out, thanks for the suggestion.

Tinkered with the RB some more. Doesn't appear to have any more surprises for me, other than being unexpectedly shiny inside.

My guess would be he doesn't like the ISIS and Circuit Sports stuff, they're quality seems to be questionable. I can't speak for him though. Looks very good otherwise, I actually like the look of those wheels.

@OutToWinPAHC THAT is a slick lookin RB :werd: I like the green on the timing cover, too.

Honestly as far as the CS arms go, I've been hammering on them for 3 years now and have yet to bend break warp loosen or even damage any of them. No play or wobble anywhere as of this afternoon.

The isis coils were a calculated risk. An opportunity allowed me to get the isis coils new for about $500 shipped. So i decided to get "crap" coilovers for the time being (original shocks were shot) so that when I bought good coilovers, i'd know / appreciate the difference. Turns out the isis coils weren't as crappy as i thought. They're still running fine (also 3 years) , so unless / until they fail, I'm spending money elsewhere (RB) for the time being. Down the road or if the isis coils fail (which ever happens first) I'm going to upgrade to some monotube more-ways-adjustable-than-I-need coils, prolly still 8k/6k rate.

hey there. fellow s13'er! i also have a minty 13(see sig). but i installed a rb20det a few years ago. now i too came into a s2 rb25 and iam going to do the switch. iam using the rb20det transmission as they are the idenitical same(fittiment wise). also i have these isis coulovers on my car for over 2 years and it's the best 500 bucks i spent.

i track and race this car and they have never let me down so you made a good choice.

i ask does your maf have the "pink" label?? and iam also going to do a freddy intake shortly after i receive my engine. keep this build going..

Yeah, I can't wait for more updates either lol. Right now mainly just waiting on money. Haven't had alot of time to pull the RB apart any further- college classes and exams have been looming over me. Also been busy slapping band-aids on the KA to make it last till I can get the RB built and installed. Always too much month left at the end of the money...

Also in the mail is a FMIC in blaaaaack, SPEC stg 1 clutch kit, WS engine harness, timing rebuild, oil water and fuel pumps, full gasket set, thermostat, chase bays PS kit for RB25, assorted hoses lines and bushings, and more. Pix as they arrive. Thanks to Enjuku Racing, NismoParts, and Raw Brokerage.

Right now I'm just doing an OEM rebuild, get it running in the chassis, then do some basic bolt ons down the road. My power goal is only ~300hp, so that shouldn't take much. Even stock it should be a hell of an upgrade over the KA. Later on I'll swap the intake for a greddy style, upgrade the injectors and turbo, add head studs, and put a Haltech in charge. Regardless of what things I want to work on, I always end up upgrading my car based on what's breaking

Hopefully next I'll be able to work on my wheels and brakes. 17x9 wheels, 5 lug swap, Z32 brakes front and rear, Z32 MC, stainles steel braided lines, maybe some PBM rear knuckles.

Ill be working on the RB for the next several weeks as the parts come in, I'll post up any progress I make. I'm hoping to get this thing installed in the next month or so.

Your car looked really nice, with nicely matching interior mods and a clean exterior look, until it got a mis-matched silvia front end.

Now it looks like an old prelude. For reals.

Thank you? Yeah, I know she looks rough and prelude-y right now. But she's a work in progress, so the rough part is kinda expected. What can I say, sometimes things get worse before they get better :gotme The paint may look good in pix, but irl its a crummy flakey wavy chipped maaco job, and theres like 4 other completely different cars in my area that have the same exact paint scheme. Thank you maaco, for letting so many cars all wear the same dress to the dance... So one way or another, the car was getting a respray no matter what. In the meantime, its ugly and looks like a prelude. I can live with that. It's actuallly kinda funny. What could possibly be a better sleeper mod than make it look like a lame car :rotfl

Srsly tho, she's got a long way to go. I assure you she will look much better upon completion :dblthumb:

The car modder's mantra. It just needs a tune, I swear! J/k It wouldn't be hard to show up my build, it's pretty sedate compared to most of the other builds I've seen on here. Unless someone accidentally posted a daewoo build. THAT guy I'd totally own. Maybe. :chuckle:

Thanks! :bigthumb: Untrue, but thanks! :dblthumb: I'm just a reasonably good wrench-turner with reasonably good taste. Y'all are the ones with the impressive builds.

I've seen nissangirl74 in the forums in the past, but I've not had the opportunity to cross paths with her as of yet. I'll keep an eye out - I've always loved the old Z cars.

Thanks alot! :bigthumb: 4 years and $10K in, and I've still got a ways to go. My thread doesn't show it, but I've literally built the thing one section at a time - Like, it got JUST coilovers, then months later I added JUST the front arms while I saved for the rears, then added those months later, etc... It's been cool in that I've gotten to feel how each set of parts affected how the car drove / handled / accelerated / braked / cornered / etc. I've also never done anything that I couldn't do in a single weekend, since this is my one and only daily. The entire rear subframe drop and swap I did in 7 hrs in a single day.

OTOH, it's definitely been frustrating at times, occasionally leading to some pretty hilarious outbursts (subframe install - the chassis studs would NOT go into the collars despite my high quality mallet, and I was already pissed off, so I got the studs at least evenly set into the collars, set the subframe on jackstands, popped my trunk and angrily jumped up and down on my chassis rails through the trunk floor while yelling at it in made-up russian - it worked. Probably not my most rational moment, but it worked lol), and more than a few times I've thought to myself, maybe Ill just make her reliable and forget the mods - but then I get some money saved and I'm all like ooooh! now I can get the shiny adjustable forged billet cnc machined high speed balanced whatevers! and then I'm broke again :rotfl .

I was going to do the engine last, or last-ish, but my leaky smokey KA had it's own opinion on the matter...

So! Coilovers! I've never been in a car with coilovers besides my own, and I've only had the isis, so I can only compare bewteen isis and stock - however, once I got the strut rebound set right they only felt a little more jarring than my dad's 99 cobra did stock. On a normal well-maintained road they're fine. It's no creampuff, but its not a shopping cart either. Construction zones and torn up roads suck, but other than that the 1-2 hours a day I spend driving in my car are quite enjoyable.

The isis ones have served me well. I admit their suspension arms even made me hesitate/cringe (CS ones are WAY better, so I went with those instead), but their coils have withstood my abuse for 3 years, so they can't be THAT crappy. Despite that however, I will later be upgrading to some 8k/6k monotubes, likely the Stance GR or similar. Or I might give the isis mono's a try. They might surprise me again. We shall see.

And, the mail came. It was a box full of black stealthy front mount intercooling hotness.

Some enjuku parts should be here tomorrow, thursday, and friday  . Still need to order a few things from rawbrokerage :naughty: . Nismoparts order is "pending" :squint: .
