Drifting as a sport, evolves just like any other sport. Look at baseball, basketball, football, ect...Once competitiveness gets factored in, people will do more and more things to win. Bats will be made from specially grown ash trees, or even composites. Footballs will be surgically stitched and precisely cut to ensure a proper gyroscopic balance, as opposed to a "pig skin" that was really made from pig's skin.

One could easily argue that technology is ruining the sport. Look at F1. Team Ferrari has millions wrapped up into their race car and are the pinnacle of all that is racing. But just a couple generations ago, Ettore Bugatti built race cars with a small group of friends and came up with ingeneous idea's like putting a single cam OVER the valves and using brakes on the front wheels.

Maybe all that is "grassroots" racing, but at the time, it was cutting edge. It's all in the perspective in the way things are looked at. In a nostalgic way of looking at things, it was always better "back in the day". Gwen Staphani (sp) had good music when in the band No Doubt. Now it's utter crap. Van Halen vs. Van "Hagar". It seems things always get worse with time.

People don't like change.

right...had to track down this thread just to post( didnt wanna make a new thread that has since been started)

so i havent owned my 240 long in the big picture of things but ive been driving long enough to know whats not ok to do in the public eye (or roads for that matter)now im not gonna bullsh!t you and say ive never drifted on an open road. i have. its always been late and it was an empty parkin lot for a condemed buildin( no one there). so no on to my reason for this rant.....my friend just bought a 92 240 coupe. first thing he does( before they even leave the frickin lot) turns the **** side ways on to the road . well as i sit here 200 miles away from home talkin to another friend. he says" dude he just got put in jail." apparently he tried "driftin" in a walmart parking lot at 700pm. well he didnt think that there would be cops around. so they turn on their blue lights. he frickin runs. .wtf.they chase him and arrest him. no he sit in jail and im pretty sure we can all kiss his car good bye.( my town dont play to many games with that kinda stuff. they're prolly gonna crush it and justify it by sayin its unsafe. he has a welded diff and other jimmy rigg things). so now im fuc& hard cuz they've got there eye out for the ****........i was so excited to have someone else with a 240 out there. but serves him right...i warned him....alot! so im finished ranttin.

im glad he went to jail, what idiot would run from the cops. i haven't been pulled over in a couple years, but when i was young and stupid, i was pulled over 6 times and everytime I could have went to jail. the best was outrunning a stang and the cop without even knowing the cop was behind me. whatever, the point is, yeah you can do risky ****, but if you are caught, dont be even more of an idiot. i've explained my way out of everything because even though i WAS breaking traffic laws, i wasnt driving or acting like an overall a-hole.

Starkos 14, damm I am jealous of your spot, that is awesome, and that green s14 is killer, great skill whoever that is. Well slappy this was another great post of yours, for me I feel drifting is an art. I would not enjoy competing, but sliding next to others would be so fun, us expressing ourselves amidst a high skill level turn.

I wish Cali had free events like you have Starkos, thats a great thing your doing do you plan on keeping it free forever? That is really giving back to the community, we have to spend money on tires so why charge an arm and a leg, but really if you do eventually charge might not want to exceed $20 a day, I don't see the point.

Here in Cali, its over $110 at the events, it totally sucks, plus we have to spend the money on our tires for the day, plus gas, plus gas to attend the event because they are mostly on the outskirts of LA, with the economy so low, I hope drifting hangs in there.

Well, we never really charge, we did an event in November to help fund our Penn State Drift Club and padrifting.net. the website was in debt so we were asking a $20 donation and we saved the site! Next year, the padrifting event would probably be in the neighborhood of a $5 donation. but yeah, its not my track, so we really can't charge anything and the penn state drift club money went to buying push brooms for the track to clean up tire. all the money that was collected went right back to the community and in nobody's pocket.

As long as I'm setting up these events, they will always be free. Trust me, I know what we have is special and I want to share it, as it was shared with me by the dude in the green s14. yeah, he's been drifting that oval for years and he's been pushing me to get better since he recruited me about a year ago. he's really the only guy a seriously tandem with. As bad as it sounds, we havent been to the oval since november and it used to be a once a month thing . oh well, Monday should be fun to try out my new tein tie rods i've had since december

DUDE! I wouldnt tell that many people! Who should know how that sort of thing will end up! I just dont want the wrong people showing up and ruining it for you and Matt!

But yea , id be out there with a broom cleaning the track just to help out.

Well , to tell you the truth about why events cost so much.... I had a 2.5 hr phone conversation with Alex Pfeiffer a few years ago about this exact topic. I had a little disagreement with Mike from U.S. Drift about the cost of events ect , and i sent Mikes reply to Alex. Alex emailed me and gave me his # and said to call him before this thing between Mike and I got really out of hand. Alex really explained to me why events cost so much money. He told me everything it takes to hold an event and after that i never questioned the cost of events again. $110 is a great price for an event if you really knew everything that went on to hold one.

Me : I was visiting this shop about 6 years ago. I was chatting with the guy behind the counter when this other emplyee says "you should watch this tape". He popped the tape in the waiting area. What i seen was just crazy. It was an all girl team and they were all drifting on track at the same time. I watched the entire video and was hooked ever since.
they had it on tape!

Its cool and I'm not too worried(although we were suspended at one point in time dude to some local a-holes), if people show up un-invited, they get the cops on their as$ within minutes. its on private property directly behind the owner's house. As for our events, anybody close enough to make the drive is invited. If people are disrespectful, it wouldn't be hard to remove them. Oh and I DO NOT POST the directions on forums, I keep track of all drivers coming to the events and make a list. All I request is an email with your name, age, car, and a small bio on yourself and the car... its easy to distinguish the bad seeds...
