I'm redesigning the SR FAQ into more of a welcome and introduction thread as opposed to a list of links.

I feel that the FAQ itself should really have an introduction to the motor. Give specs and manufacturing dates for each generation of motor. I'd hate to include average price as that seems to ebb and low depending on market demand an import availability.

I do want to include pros and cons of the motor. I feel it would help people who are new to the motor make a more educated choice as to if they want to persue getting an SR.

I want to shy away about making it an install how to. We have a ton of articles and links on the topic, but I will include those links.

I'm brainstorming about material to put in it right now, and would like some input on what to include.

I want to stay away from a lot of "i heard this" or "i read that" Let's try to make this into an informative section that people from around the net use as reference

Sounds to me like you are doing everything right already, I cant think of anything to add to your proposed idea, I'm just posting to show my support. Keep up the good work.

I think you are most likely right, although with a good revamp it should become a very useful resource for those who are still learning about the SR20DET. I think it should be more than just a FAQ. It could be an intro to the motor along with a good FAQ that can answer many of the questions that people post on an average day. Questions like, what kind of oil should I use, and why does my car idle funny. I think with some brainstorming we can come up with a lot of questions that newbys have. Then at the end of the FAQ there can be the glossary of SR related links. Mods, any idea if it is possible to force first time visitors to the SR section to go into the forum rules and FAQ threads. I think too many people are in a hurry to ask a question and they skip right over the stickys.

Man, if I could force people to go there, it would have been done already :D

Speed, I'm cynical and know that people don't visit FAQs, but the SR FAQ is pretty lacking anyways. I would like to think that if we redesign it, put a lot of useful info in it, such as oil viscosities, spark plug info, common things, we should hopefully see a downturn in the constant asking of the same ordinary questions after a while.

I'll agree that not a lot of people do look at the FAQ section, nor do they see the blinking search button at the top of the page. I would really like to see the FAQ section a little more beefy. I've looked all through it to find out information. I think one of the sections that needs working on is the Parts guide. Everyone has posted all these part numbers, comparable parts, or questions about parts and the whole thing is so spread out and disorganized. I have all the part numbers (JDM and USDM comparable) copied off there. I've gone through them and put them in a PDF file, organized by type of part. It makes it a little easier and maybe a link to that would be better than 6 or 7 pages of postings which you have to search through.

Also, routine maintenance FAQs and such could be put in a PDF file, uploaded and have the thread locked so it doesn't fill up with junk. To me it's all about organization. The information is there, maybe not in the FAQs section like it should be, but it's on the site somewhere, it just needs to be properly handled.

I know I may be getting a little bit off topic here, but I think we should have a LOCKED thread titled "What will my car run" in which estimates for different setups could be posted to eliminate all those other ones which are routinely posted. It may be perceived as misinformation, but in the end I believe it's for the greater good.

Anywho, just my two cents!

Cracker, you read my mind about the organization.

Instead of linking threads, though, I want to integrate as much as possible into one thread. Look at the vert FAQ and 240 gen FAQ. I like those cause they're inclusive.

Think you can email me your condensed pdf for parts? [email protected] I would love to start up a thread dedicated for known parts, and one for requesting parts. That way we can leave paul's thread in tact, people ask there, and I'll plug it into the locked, condensed thread.

Keep the ideas coming!

The problem everyone has is searching the faq's. Its too much info to thumb thru if your looking for a quick answer which most people are. The current design of it is alright and is similar to the 240 tech pages which are more organized (not by much though).

If your going to change anything about the faq's its gotta be the diagnostics & common problems b/c that's been "coming soon" since 2005. Maybe put in the index to the jdm s14 & usdm s13 fsm's to start.

Also making the search link bigger doesn't make it any easier to rifle thru the wealth of information that this site has. I believe the best way to go is to separate the forums from the proven facts. I'm tired of looking for an answer to something and getting "my friends does that too, let me know what happens".

I like the idea of the sr's pros and cons but you should also note that the chassis was originally designed around that motor and the ka is a frankenstein for the U.S. market.

What the KA is or is not has nothing to do with the SR section, people can search, read, and learn, then they can make the decision which motor is better, we can not choose for them, and putting something like that in the FAQ would be very pretentious.

The idea of a pros/cons portion is to help people thinking about getting an SR. Not everyone has the mentality "I must put everything the japanese got on my silvia". Also, I know a ton of people who love the KA. I tend to try not to sound as if I'm saying my motor is better than your motor

^^^ Exactly, the only "JDM" part on my car is the motor. The Pros and Cons is a good idea, every motor has its strengths, and are better suited for different uses. There are also certain problems associated with the SR, these should be discussed as well.
