Wes: I suggest that you download WinISDPro

You can use that program to figure out the optimum volume that your enclorsure should be.

I say he applies some of that high school geometry and figures out what the volume of the current box is, and tries to match that, while maintaining the port.

Geometry...Pfff.... I didn't never not pay no attention in that ther class... I ain't gonna need that crapoola, i gonna be a nukular engineer

Wes: I think that you have the MTX Audio T8104.

I put that into WinISD and figured out that for a fairly "flat" frequency response you will need a Ported box with a volume of 2.568 Cu/Ft Tuned to approximately 25Hz. The port should be ~2.68in diameter and ~7.20in long.

That will yeild you very good output up to ~175Hz~200Hz with a "spike" at about 25~30Hz caused by the port.

2.568cf is gonna be a bit too large for his trunk.

He can use .63cf sealed (F3=44hz, max SPL = 111db)or1cf ported and tuned to 32hz (f3=33hz and max SPL = 113db)

Here's a nice spec sheet that includes that woofer:http://www.vtc.at/themed/files...e.pdf

Well the thing is, his Sub has a Fs of ~24. That's why I went with a quite large box. I think that he would be very happy with the sub hitting that low .

But like you said, he probably doesn't have the space . But hey, you never know, he could be really good a custom fiberglass enclosures

Wes: "fiberglass? What's that???"

I used to play around a bunch with TermPro and others and found out that the manufacturers recommended enclosures work out just fine. Bigger box = more cone movement = "lower" bass notes = less control and power handling. Since he is only going to have a single sub in that huge car, a sealed enclosure would probably be best to ensure accuracy and longevity. If he ends up wanting a bit more bass, he can always add another sub in an iso configuration (without building a bigger box) for an additional 6db assuming that sub receives the same amount of power as the first sub (double power = 3db, double cone surface = 3db for a total of 6db).

Sometimes it's a sacrifice, space for bass. Ideally a compromise between the two is what we settle for. Here is an idea construct a custom enclosure that has both port and the woofer cone facing the under side of the rear deck lid. You may need to trim some of the sheet metal, and then build a grill of for the package tray but then more sound will reach the listeners ears and require less power from the amp. To save even more space, make it sealed enclosure, skip the port all together. But then you’ll have less volume(SPL), and more space for clubs.

Thanks for the info guys!!! Very helpful!

The ported box I had (or have now) was just fine.. I dont care if they can hear it in the next county, it gave me enough rumble to make me happy......

Next time I am at the shop, ill see about building something...

yes, but basstubes are horrible. i think you'd be very happy with a JL audio 10w7, i think they might even have 8 inch w7's. if you want bass, then a w7 is the way to go

Nope, if you want real base, Then a Cerwin Vega 18 inch Stroker is the way to go

When in doubt, Stroke it

lol no way man. if you're after high bass levels that make you go stupid; get a Kicker SoloX series subwoofer. if you're looking for quality bass get a JL Audio w7 series subwoofer. If you want a little of each at a good price, i recommend JL Audio 12w6v2.

Good suggestion, But...

The Cerwin Vega 18 inch Stroker has been proven to be able to hit 155Db+! That's a helluvalot

Also, the Stroker is relatively inexpensive. IIRC, it sells for $250~$400 retail. Compare that to the SoloBaric 18inch, which cost upwards of $600 retail.

So which is the better value? I can get two strokers for the price of one Solo

Good point my friend, however for any sub to hit 155 dB a lot of watts is needed. These watts also need to be supplied by a good amp, good amps like the diamond d7, jl 1000/1 run into the $1000 mark.

Oh yah, you'd also have to invest in a lot of dynamat to keep your car from falling apart from all the vibrations haha. Not to mention shattered glass, etc.

you don't know me too well.

I don't buy dynamat. I make my own

Yeah, alot of wattage is needed. Approximately 1600 RMS!

But hey, I could strap like 10 pyramid 1600w amps together. That would be good for atleast 200w RMS
