hey everyone I just turned 17 today and im buying my very first 240sx this week...im only payin 700 bucks for it...its a 1989 nissan 240sx fastback 5 speed manual... i was wondering if yu guys could give me any suggestion on what to do to get the most power and like the most important things to make it run strong and fast...its got 168,000 on the motor and car, and also any ideas where i could get a new hatch for the back trunk and just the trunk lid... cus where the wings sits it rusted some pretty good size holes threw it or what i could do to repair it...thanks alot for the advice and keep up the good work

Starting with a REALISTIC budget will be the first thing for you to set and post. Do you plan to keep the stock eng.(ka24e)? You say you want suggestions to make the "most power and to make it run stron and fast", but do you want it to handle well? (s13 tends to understeer with stock susp. Not as bad as your used to/does if you drive hondas though! lol) You should be able to find a used trunk lid on this site in the classifieds or at your local wreckers.

If you don't give us a budget, and you just want to make POWER and go FAST, I'll just say RB26DETT and lots o' cash or credit. But I doubt you want to spend that on a $700 car.

thanks for the advice.. i dont have a budget really.. im only 17... just ruened 17 yesterday....i just wanna get the most out of it on the smallest amount of money , probably just a body kit , full exhaust , cold air intake , suspension , brakes maybe...also how much would it cost roughly to rebuild the engine , with new pistons and cranks...cus 168,000 miles is quite a bit... and what other types of engines can you put in it and for what price...thanks again

I am new here aswell, been reading the forums for awhile just never signed up till today. You got a nice deal on the car. I also purchased a 240sx for cheap. I bought a 1990 240sx same body and also stick for $500 last fall. You most likely have the ka24e or the ka24de engine in that car, sohc. If you dont plan on spending alot of money you wont get much out of this car or engine. I have been slowly working on it and I have already spent close to $4000 on mine. Half of that being stereo but I do all the work myself. Good suspension isnt cheap but its a good place to start, and if your not spending alot of money all you can really do to begin with is intake and exhaust. I got a weapon-R intake for about $100 and I also purchased headers, high flow cat, and a full exhaust for about $600. New plugs, wires, distributer, alternator, and other little things for it aswell. I also had to replace my heater fan, it died after the 2nd week I owned it. I have also gutted my entire interior and started over from scratch. It was nice while I was doing the stereo. I bought racing seats aswell for under $500. So to make it look alittle better and be alittle faster you are looking at around $2-3000 for starters, in my opinion. Unless you know people and get some great deals.

but anyways you should get use to how it drives and then think about either swapping 91+ engine, sr20det, or one of the rb engines.

anyways good luck and enjoy it.

i want to say good luck with everything but i also want to tell that if your dsm friend's car is in atleast stock condition and not destroyed there is no way you will beat him in a straight race much less anything else without atleast 2k into the car. if hes stock hes got what, 210hp/210tq and AWD, youve got maybe 140 with that sohc, rwd and maybe 600 lbs on him. with 500 bucks i bet he could have 30-50 more hp. your 500 bucks will get you maybe 10-20. you cant have your car be fast, look nice all while saving money,

fast cheap reliable <--- pick 2

both my dsm friends cars (talons) are the hatchback DOHC's with front wheel drive 5 speed , but the one with the turbo is full loaded with nice factory rims and electri windows and stuff so its a lil heavier

ok buddy, just don't ask why no one replies to your threads when you talk back to them.

and sell your car before you disgrace it or total it.no, i'm not f'ing joking, sell your car before you ruin it you friggin rice bag.

as for latin_prince, i doubt many people will just randomly "hook you up" with parts, especially after only 1 post. it's never really a good idea to buy "cheap" stuff. just look for the part you want using the Search button up top. or you could post WTB's, but search FS parts first.

and welcome to nico.

Welcome to the community. I personally think the "Sell your car before you ruin it" stuff is a bit on the rude side. However, get used to it.

Hate to tell you this, but I bought a 1992 with about the same miles (for alot more, don't ask), and I have discovered one big thing on these 240SX's. The engines don't age well at all. Mine is now upto 184,000 miles, and does have problems. I would say fix everything first.

A)The front crankshaft oil seal LOVES to go out on these cars.B)For that matter I would suspect ANY oil seal on a car that age with that sort of mileageC)Motor mounts should be suspectD)Bushings will be trashE)Click the red search button and search for "Timing Chain rattle" or something to that effect.F)Have funG)Be safeZ)Enjoy the car

Its pretty good for the money, but dont go and waist you money on bodykits and rims and crap. Then your definately not going to beat your friends. Just go for intake and exhaust. and if you can punch out your catalic converter. thats easy horsepower right there. Id rather have a fast 240 than a slow 240 that looks a little nicer.
