First, DO NOT mess with the CAT!It's a federal offence and can mean jail time if caught!

Second, a non-clogged cat does NOT hinder performance. NO HP gains by punching one out vs. a clean/new one. Depending where you are (smog tests) testers can tell based on your emissions if you've tampered with the CAT or not.

If you suspect your cat is clogged, take it out and look through it.It should look like a honeycomb, but you'll be able to see light through it easily.

thanks for the advice.. i dont have a budget really.. im only 17... just ruened 17 yesterday....i just wanna get the most out of it on the smallest amount of money , probably just a body kit , full exhaust , cold air intake , suspension , brakes maybe...also how much would it cost roughly to rebuild the engine , with new pistons and cranks...cus 168,000 miles is quite a bit... and what other types of engines can you put in it and for what price...thanks again

Um, for budget mods, don't go visual, first, look into simple bolt on parts that are cheap and you know won't blow up your engine, second, look carefully at visual mods because you want to enhance the sports car look of the 240 and sometimes some very mild modifactions can make your car look stunning. I mean don't go for the first glitzy part that catches your eye because as attention grabbing as that part may look on it's own, it can make you car look... well.....

thanks alot guys! these are the types of posts i like! dont like the negative ones...i live in new york and they prolly have a law about punching the CAT but ill have to ask around ...i recently got a nice mufler from my friend , its got a 2 - 21/2 inch inlet and a 5 inch or bigger outlet and its glass pack and my friend said it shoots flames cus the lil pieces of glass lite on fire, cus he got pulled over for it by a local sherrif . lol. but thanks alot and any other sutff yu guys have just let me know what you think or know about the car and performance mods

i only paid 800 for my 95 240sx se 5spd pwr everything sunroof 80k miles built engine lowered full intake full exhaust short throw a/c blows cold everything works suspension work lets just say i was a car salesman it was a trade in and i made a really good deal on the trade and the new car. i made stupid bank and i bought a car stupid cheap. my manager was gonna put it on the lots for 6k but i sai dno thanks its mine. its got a good 3-4k under the hood not bad for 800 bucks huh

I think I forgot to mention, check the plugs!!! If they don't say NGK, you may want to switch them over to NGK (the OEM brand). If they say Bosch, definitely switch to NGK. Do a search for Bosch, and you will have your explanation.

nice deal I got mine for 400 with a rebuilt motor and transmission, brand new clutch, working ac, the works, it even has LSD on it I was pretty shocked there, new tires, perfect interior, I just need to do some front end work nothing seriuse, just hood and fenders, and its good to go,(they are dented a bit) the guy I bought it from used the ones that were on it for his car and put his old ones on this one. oh well 400 what you gonna do. I would say choose whats more important to you looks or speed, right now I'm working on looks and I'll do speed later. but if you look on ebay you can get alot of nice stuff for the 240sx just be carefull alot of people have stuff marked wrong, so dont get duped just ask yourself if it really is what they say it is why is it only 20 bucks for a header? or something like that. I just finished my stereo next is seating and carpeting, after that....I get to go pick up my new motor, YEAH

I have to agree if you want speed a 240sx is not the car. Let me say your car looks pretty clean for $700. I just bought my first 240sx because the potential for a real tight riding sportcar is a 240sx. Meaning a solid rear wheel drive Japanese import you got to go with a Nissan 240sx. If you wanted a car ready to go for speed find yourself a Twin Turbo '90-'95 300zx and that will blow away not only your friends Talon but a lot of new cars on the road today. But you might blow yourself into a telephone pole because your going to need some driving exp for that amount of speed. I've had Maxima's and 300'z and they were fast but none are as fun or real sportscar feel as the 240sx. All I can say I took way too long to wake up and get into the right car. Also dont get me wrong you put in a turbo into you 240sx your off too... but there's a lot of other modifications so to save time and money buy another nissan. Finally for a low budget doesnt everyone use one modification a month so you wont go broke and appreciate the modification and dont go cheap doesnt last and gives you no quality.

hey hondaracr welcome. my first 240 was an 89 AND THE SAME COLOR TOO! anyways this is what you do. your car is 17 years old. don't spend your money on all that cool s**t yet. what im sayin is: make your car drive like it was new. replace broken or worn parts. preventive maintainance. remember your car cant go fast if your engine/transmission mounts move all over the place, your consuming too much oil, and ALL of your bushings have become dust. plus, if your timing chain rattles like crazy, how are you gonna hear your intake? get what im sayin
