Just out of curiosity, did you get a clear title with the car? Any chance that it could have been stolen? You did say the PO was kind of a shady character. Some cars have a feature where the car can be remotely disabled if it has been stolen. Not sure if they had that technology in '02 and I just remember hearing that from someone. Not sure if it's true or not.

I only have a single key for the car, and it is not an original. I have pulled the cowl off the column, as far as I can tell, there is no sensor ring on the ignition, just the trigger for the key beep.
Hmm, if you can, take apart the ignition and just make sure. It is possible that it was upgraded to a newer module at some point to add the key immobilizer.

That's a shot in the dark, but anything is possible, and that's easier then going inch by inch over the harness.

in the mean time...what about your cam sensor being bad? you said you checked grounds...did you just check there connections or did you trace the wires and make sure they were un harmed? might have nicked one and it broke just enough to not work now
Cam sensor will not fully disable the engine, just make it batch fire. I have continuity tested the wires, and they all check good, for cam and crank.

lockout box is just the term i use, its just his security system. might be a dealership issue. ill ask around but i think theres something funky going on with his security.

engine managment is a f'd up thing to deal with
Thats what I thought. Hopefully someone has experience this before. Im contemplating buying a new security module.

Never stolen, never wrecked. By shady, I meant he was like 19, and didnt know squat about cars, and wasn't about to answer any of my tough questions.

The key based immobilizers use a sensor ring mounted to the base of the ignition cylinder. Its right on the end, and if its there, you see it. They need to be close to the butt of the key, where the RFID chip is located.

WWell with the busy holiday season over, I finally got some time to reexamine the Subaru. It has just been sitting untouched for 2 months or so. After poking at things and testing everything, ITS ALIVE!!!!

Here is what I figured out. Part of the wiring harness was pinched. It was stewing up cam and crank signals. Replace the whole harness, car still wouldn't run.

Now had injector pulse at all cylinders. Discovered one cylinder had no spark. Turns out one of the coil packs had a little corrosion. Cleaned up, and it started firing, but only on one cylinder.

Undettered I pulled the plugs. Only one plug showed any sign of fuel. All the injectors ohmed good, but I decided to throw a hail merry. Replaced all the fuel injectos, and she fired right up.

Multiple problems FTL.

Half of the front body work is missing, and the power steering resivoir is empty because I don't have any atf lying around. Maybe next week before it goes to the body shop.

Last time I checked, you could do victory donuts and take pictures without a front end and lacking power steering :)

Dont want snow in bad places, and I would prefer not to destroy the power steering pump.

Nice - glad to hear you got it running. Funny that stepping away from something like this will bring some clarity of thought later.... you come back to it and BINGO!

How much were the injectors?

Usually they're pretty pricey. That would have sucked if that didn't fix it!

Good job!
