Hey guysover the next couple of months, i plan on taking my 240 to the next level. as it sit, to the best of my knowledge the car has 220xxx on it. she still runs good and is in great shape, but i want to start to grip race at a local track. i dont have a ton of money i want to sink into this car, i just want it to be a good platform for me to learn on, and in the future the car may get a little more wild.

i bought the car in august 07 for a whopping $802 not running. i spent $2 on new battery terminals and the car started right up. i have sine put maybe $500 into it driving it ALL winter.

now i have decided to start racing, and this is a great car to do so with. i want to get it into top shape before i start beating the **** out of it though, so here is where my build thread comes in.

i plan on updating this tread often, so keep coming back

Plans:polys all aroundkyb agx/tien springsobx helical differentialmoog ball joints and tierod endsf1 stage one clutch and lightweight flywheelb&m short throw shifterz32 brakes & MBCss brake linesquiet exhaust

and im going to go through the ka24e with a finetooth comb, new gaskets and seals, get it ready to be beat on

here she is nice and clean before tear down

Rear sub-frame is first on the list. polys all around, new ball joints, and a helical diff. i was looking at the ES sub frame inserts and im not too pleased with them. i think im going to window weld the stock bushings instead. good idea?? all the stock components will be sandblasted and painted

box o goodies

as she will sit until Tuesday

1. I so dig that tone of blue

2. Car seems to be in great shape

3. Plans seem pretty respectful

-

1. Wheels gotta go asap

1. i really like that blue too. im a painter, so the car will be repainted the same color but with a little gold flake in it. im going to paint the roof black.2. the car had 3 owners before me(carfax) and all of them were in north carolina. so the car has virtually no rust on it. GREAt platform to start with.3. thanks

1. i agree, the wheels are terrible. im looking for a set of enkei 92 style wheels, im going to paint the centers gold or bronze. keeping it 4 lug though

an no, i really like the mud flaps.

Good plans!

+1 to seeing a NEW 240sx owner that wants to GRIP race the car and NOT DRIFT IT.

X2 on the blue i like that color.

And yes the wheels needa go, or just rough them up a bit and paint them black with a red lip and you'll get the fan boys thinking they are Advans lol.

Good build, were those drive shaft bolts a pain to get off or did you use an air compress wrench? I'm planning on work on my transmission leaks and I will attempt to break mine loose by hand...

i just set the ebrake and hit it with an open end wrench. they came off like butter.

is it normal for all the hardware to be gold??

that's an awesome looking car for that many miles.

+1 for someone who plans on legit racing rather than some street drifter.

A few links you might enjoy

I read some where that you should freeze them before use , why? i have noooo idea.
EazyBreazy wrote:for the solid aluminum ones yes, your also gonna have to heat the subframe and freeze the bushings, but in your case that may be the best thing to do, especially if you cant get the original bushing to lower down when you loosen the bolts

The cold aluminum will shrink slightly. Not much but it will help make it easier to push into the subframe.

Also looking at the picture, the ones with the flat tops should be for the top. The ones with the cutout, is for the bottom. It's so the nuts don't stick out past the bushings.

thank you much

i know how to put them in, i have done them on my fiero. freeze the bushings, heat the sub frame, pop them in, clamp them together with a big bolt and nut.

freezing them shinks them slightly, heating the sub frame enlarges it slightly, at room temp they will never come out.

Nice build, looks like you got some good plans. You may want to look into some motor work in the near future though. That car has some miles on it. If you dont feel like a swap, or your budget wont allow it, check the compression, and consider some basic tune up parts ( plugs, wires, fuel filter, coolent system service its all up to u.

keep us posted

Thursday

today was all about the diff. i had about 3 hours to put the new diff in the case. it went fairly smooth considering this is the first time i have ever done it. the obx hlsd fit perfectly. it does not need to be shimmed which is a load off my mind. it was not exactly spec, but it will not be an issue. this weekend, probably sunday night, i plan on taking the front suspension off the car, and next week is all about bushings

Today i had a little bit of time between work and dinner with the gf, so i decided to start taking the front suspension off. some things i noticed is that i need a new steering rack and my 3 month old moog tie rod ends have blown boots so i want poly boots for them.

i want to delete power steering since i have to get a new rack, but i dont want to use a power steering rack w/o power steering. does anyone make a true manual steering rack for a s13?? also i assume i can find boots, but is there any place that is be cheaper??

i only got the drivers side done today, ill do the pass side before i go to the shop tomorrow.

Update tomorrow night

The only manual rack is stock ratio which sucks balls, you'd need to do some working out b4 bringing it to the track. Have you ever considered the mr2 electric pump?

my fiero has manual steering, its not bad once you are moving. if everything else in the system was working well, i would just get a new rack. but i have a nasty leak from the top line as well as a blown rack.

do you have a link to the manual rack??
