Not really, water to air intercoolers are not really meant for extended use, but they can be used, you just have to run a heat exchanger inline.

Ivan,

Awesome man! Back in 2001 I was happy to get 412rwhp, things have come a long way man, and you have been a huge part of it. Congrats!

Also, what can you spin that motor up to safely?

I am currently running a water intercooler setup. With constant running water pump, 2 transmission (B&M type) oil coolers and a reservoir (2 gallons) using water and water wetter. the intercooler is a Garrett (the same as the Syclone)Running at 8 psi street driven runs great on a completly stock engine.

Even, off boost, the intake charge helps to cool the water. Also, a water intercooler is WAY more efficient and can cool the intake charge BELOW ambient air.Why I am using this, to simplfy turbo piping bends and the sleeper look!!

Here is the latest on my car....

I installed the Alternator relocation bracket on my motor so I could finally get a belt around the water pump and fill the coolant system and get it burped... I filled the coolant system up with straight water with a bottle of Water Wetter added for heat transfer, lubrication and corosion resistance... During thermal cycling, I figured out the wiring for the dual pusher fans and got the AEM to control them...

Now that I could run the motor for an extended period of time, I was able to top off the trans fluid and run it thru the gears... The AEM AT trans control is set up for an MKIV Supra and the shift solenoid A/B pattern is different from the Nissan AT trans.. I changed the table to correct the shift order and got that working right... The AEM uses TPS versus wheel speed to control shifts... I have a 300ZX TT vehicle speed sensor and 28" tall tires so the signal getting to the AEM is not correct... This throws off the shifts... Temporarily I changed the VSS correction table to get things close but this doesnt change the reading on the speedo... I picked up a Dakota Digital vehicle speed signal modifier that I am going to install tomorrow to alter the signal so the AEM and speedo get the right signal for my specific setup of tires, gears and VSS...

Yesterday I worked on getting my car closer to being finished... I firmed up the mounting of the S15 headlights and front bumper... The front end is all solid now... I just need to aim the headlights after I finalize the ride height... I got the Auto Meter NEXUS gauges installed in the dash and wired up the sending units, control box and remote... I am running a boost, fuel pressure and oil pressure gauge.. I mounted the AEM UEGO gauge in an AM carbon fiber cup and installed it on the steering column... I installed the Greddy Profec B Spec II in the ashtray.... During some laps around the shop, I found the rear tires were rubbing slightly in a couple places... I adjusted the rear coil overs to bring the back end of the car up about an inch and used a mallet to roll the fender lips over where there was tire contact... The new ride height is pretty sweet... My car has a nice muscle car rake to it now... While on the lift for the suspension changes, I decided to throw the corner scales under the tires to get a weight on the car... Unfortunatly its heavier than I expected... It ended up weighing just under 2600 lbs... Almost everything is installed on the car that it will have when I race it... I am predicting a 2800 lb race weight with me in the drivers seat...

Right now the car starts very quickly with just a blip on the throttle... It settles into a nice idle and doesnt lope at all... although it has not been tuned yet, throttle response is good and it drives around the parking lot just fine... Next on the list is an alignment and then hopefully onto the dyno rollers... There are many other small things that need to be finished like IC pump wiring, mounting the solenoids and switches for the nitrous, mounting the boost control solenoid, finish looming the engine bay wire harness, mounting the AEM EMS, AEM injector driver, AEM UEGO controller, MSD DIS 4, etc....

I am getting really close to a finished project

Ivan, your project is sounding absolutey awesome!!

True story: I was at the gas station today filling up when a guy in a S13 pulled up to get some gas as well. I started chatting with him, told him about NICO and stuff-- he had already been here, and said to me "dude did you see that guy Ivan's car? That thing is freakin crazy!!" hahaha amazing how word gets around-- I (and I guess LOTS of other people!) cant wait to see how it turns out.

The intake on my car is a "two off" that I designed and had fabricated for myself and a buddy of mine... The VSR style intake is still under development and will be the slickest intake manifold availble for the KA.. I PROMISE you that you wont be dissappointed... We are a WAYS off on a final product release date or any pricing guesses at this time...

The alternator bracket is going to be produced and sold to the public.. Watch the forums for product relase info... We have some amazing announcements coming up....

That would be IKEA... She is my dog and goes to the shop with me every day... The Vet believes she is a Border Collie / Greyhound mix... I adopted her as a puppy and she will be 4 years old in Aug.... If you ever have a chance to stop by the shop, you will find out how unique of a dog she really is... Crazy amounts of energy, very agile, loves to play fetch, and jumps like no other... She is SO smart and knows sit, stay, shake, jump, spin, speak, wall ride, get the kitty, fluff the bean bag, etc etc etc....

Here is a picture of her doing a "wall ride" for Frank...

UPDATE!!!!!!

I have had the car on the dyno... I ran into some ignition issues which halted our progress... Did a whole bunch of research and talked to the folks at AEM about my ignition setup and tried all sorts of things but nothing was helping... Eventually I figured out the issue... The coils I bought off of ebay didnt have the plug boots on the end of them... As cylinder pressures rose, the resistance across the spark plug gap increased to the point where the spark would jump from the coil to the head instead of sparking in the cylinder... Four plug boots later we were in business...

We are tuning the car on pump gas (93 octane) as this is the gas that the car will be running around on the street with... I have a 1 bar spring in the Tial 44... I expected the boost to creep a bit due to the small WG and large turbo.. The reason for the size of the WG was to aid in holding boost when I am running 45 psi... The smaller puck will be less likely to be forced open by exhaust back pressure... Anyway... We started making short runs and watching the boost, AF, knock... Every few pulls we would stop to pull the plugs to look for signs of detonation... The first runs were pulls to the 5500 rpm range and then we would pull another 500 rpms, tune, watch boost, read plugs.... We had to call it a day at 7500 rpms due to a customers dyno appointment... Here are some details for you to ponder

15 psi @ 4600 rpms7500 rpms and HP is still climbing (but so is boost)7500 rpms and TQ is JUST crestingBoost crept to 24 psi @ 7500 but appeared to be leveling offNO noise on the knock sensorNO evidence of detonation on the plugs

These runs were made with full exhaust (my dump sealed off)These runs were made with a full intake and air filterThese runs were made with just water cycling through my intercooler (no ice)This is an AUTOMATIC car (Nissan 4 speed)These runs were made with ONLY 93 octane in the tank with nothing else added or injectedThe car was set up exactly like it would be on the streets of Chicago....

and the result is????????

Dangit Ivan, what's taking so long? This is like waiting for the commercials on American Idol to be over, but it's 10X worse!!
