As for cost prices between KA-T and SR it all depends on who you talk to.
Now, while going KA-T allows you to pick and choose your parts, more torque and power due to bigger displacement, and easier smog passability there are many other things that come into play.
For one, you will most likely need to rebuild your stock KA engine. Now for it to handle moderately boosted situations of 10psi or more (reliably) you will have to fork over $$$ for forged/performance internals.
Next comes the turbo kit itself, most people say you can piece together a relatively cheap kit, but at the same time you know they will flame for not getting quality parts. A turbo, intercooler, engine management, FPR, downpipe, elbow and the other misc parts will run you at least $1500-$2000 if not more.
Then comes the reinforcement of the other parts... fuel pump, battery relocation (optional) and the other loose odds and ends will pretty much run you up to your quoted price of $3500. Now like you said that is a pretty good price but it's quite the work and something that I don't want to nor need to go that route mostly because I'm looking for moderate power (300 WHP) and just a "quick" clean daily.
Most SR swaps run between $2000-$3000 (ballpark), generally don't need an engine rebuild, all engine management and drivability issues come with the swap and with simple bolt-on's and a mild tune can put you around 230-250HP. Not quite at my goal but nothing a little more tuning, some bumpsticks, and an S15 turbo couldn't cure. Not to mention that SR parts are wayyyy more available and abundant than KA-T
Basically I'm looking for something that is pretty much a "complete" swap with little hassle on my part, not that I am not capable of nor wouldn't mind tackling but at this point in my life I don't have time or money to have my daily down and re-build my KA.
Now in conclusion I think KA-T's are bad @ss and in no way I am I playing the SR is better than the KA-T card but for me and my needs SR is the easier way to go.
I do plan on keeping the KA to maybe one day tool around with and rebuild, boost and throw in a shell but for now..... SR get's my vote.
