In most RWD applications, it's not necessary to use a flex joint. FWD cars twist perpendicular to the exhaust where as Longitudinally mounted engines twists parallel to the exhaust. It really depends on how much movement there is and how much movement the exhaust mounts allow. How well the exhaust /downpipe fits can also affect whether a flex joint is needed or not.

Yeah well.. when you're a dumbass like me, stuff like this happens... My exhaust was only held on by the last 2/3 hangers, and then the turbo.. haha. i'll do it right this time.

Well... I got a 8" section of flex tube in my downpipe, the exhaust is held up by really good now.. I welded up them manifold in all the spots that it cracked at.. and resurfaced the flange.. I'll get some pics of it now. I was told not to slot the runners because it would put more strain on each individual runner, rather than a whole. I also filled the motor mounts with 3m window weld, so it shouldn't torque as much.. hopefully there's a lot less movement and I don't have this problem again.

Well, I hope it holds up, but I won't be surprised if the flange warps again.

ALways slot the flange, whoever said it will stress the runners more is wrong. Each runner has two studs holding it, by not cutting the flange...does this increase the amount of fasteners somehow...I'm thinking no.

It doesn't have to be big at all. Pretty much as wide as the blade you use to cut it should be fine. Keep in mind, the manifold expands outward. The slots will grow in size with the expansion of the entire manifold. The slotting just keeps the flange from preventing the expansion.

So I got everything installed. I must have had some crazy leaks. I didn't change my setup at all, and it hit 15psi right away, which it previously was set at 10psi, so I had to lower the boost a little... the turbo spools like crazy now. I used all new gaskets, and metal ones for the turbo. Everything bolted up good without having to force it. Also, filling those motor mounts with the window weld helped a lot. The engine looks a lot more smooth, and doesn't torque as bad now.. I can kind of feel the extra vibrations in the car, but I have coilovers and such, so I don't really care. I hope it holds up this time. I'm going to get some videos next week probably.

Hope it works out for you. I have a IAP mani that's about to get installed on a newly built KA. IAP offers a 1 year warranty, and they do recommmend using Megan flex head down pipe. I also have the IAP downpipe from the turbo, so hopefully it's all work together as I am hoping to run at around 15 psi...good luck.

So I figured I update this.. it's been two months since the manifold cracked, i've been running anywhere from 8-14psi, and it's held up great. I'm going to have to blame the cracking on myself, due to me getting ahead of myself and hurrying to much to get it done. My exhaust/downpipe was pulling on the turbo pretty bad, and the flange on the manifold was acually warped before I put it on from the previous owner, and I didn't pay any attention to it. But everything is good so far, and I plan to be using a GT35 on my built motor and looking for over 500whp.

Have you considered the MSII yet? I keep reading up on it. I very well may go with that setup when I rebuild my S14. Cheap and user friendly are big bonuses in my book. Not to mention the support it has, I can't believe the amount of people that use it.

So you finally got a set of rods? I thought I might have my DE motor built before you finished yours.

Dude, I have a brand new set of Pauter rods and Ross pistons I'm unloading. I'll mark them down 100 each from the advertised price. Shoot me an email if you're interested at all. I haven't listed them [email protected]

lrb_2000, I have a question about your kouki tail. Did you use 3 pieces or 4 pieces of the tail light? There is a long piece that goes under both light and the center garnish. Did you have yours painted or you didn't change it?
