My Girlfriend

She's yelling at me right now cause I never let her help me do stuff with my car.

Okay, I know that alot of you guys are gonna say "oh blah blah I would love to have a girl that wanted to work on a car with me" but think about it, would you really?? It sounds sorta bad, but to be honest I enjoy working on cars with my guy friends, trash talking eachother and having a good time... and, at the risk of offending some of our female members, I really feel like its just a time for male bonding and chillin with friends, doin the work together, ya know?

...But my girl is angry cause I always talk with her about parts and crap, asking her what she thinks about different setups and all that. She's like, "I have to listen to you talk about the car all the time, but you never let me do anything with it" etc.

What would you do?

does she have a car? work on that. My wife always says she wants to work on her car, well when I get some free time she is going to build an engine! I will prep all the parts and tell her step by step what to do but she's turning the wrenches from oil pan to valve cover. It's possible to work on a car with a woman, it's just different. I think the fact that she is your girlfriend is the problem. Were she just a woman friend who was into cars it would be less awkward.

yeah TMS you're right- it really is the fact that she is my girlfriend... I really dont think I could walk around with my head up if I told my guy friends "not this time guys, Amanda is helping me put on this part..." or whatever... I'd be made fun of to no end- and with good reason.

She doesnt have a car YET, but she's looking to buy a Mustang this spring. I honestly cant wait to help her working on that, cause thats a different situation... its just tougher with my car... I donno...

Hanging out with the guys is one thing (which every woman needs to understand), but if you just want to work on your car, and your gf actually *wants* to help you, then geez, it's a no-brainer. It'll probably be a bit slow at first, but soon, you'll be under the car on a creeper, asking her for the 10 mm 3/8" 12 point deep socket, and having it handed to you immediately. Plus, she'll quickly understand why you need 4 or 5 10 mm sockets! Nice to have a clean pair of hands too for taking notes and pictures, and grabbing things that cannot get greasy.

Is that really true? I'm damn proud my gf knows more about cars than most guys.

yeaaaaaah I know you guys are right... I just havnt really had a chance to find something that I can work with her on thats not that big of a deal. I mean everything that Ive done so far has been for the first time, and I kinda wanted my more knowledgeable (male) friends around to point me in the right direction...

I also dont want her "getting bored" in the middle of a project and bailing on me. I know she's "interested" and "thinks itll be fun," but I dont think she realises that sometimes things take HOURS in my unheated and dirty garage... I donno if she knows what shes gettin into sometimes.

But then again I could always start with somethin small...

Im not really worried about her screwing up... lol I dont think shes even strong enough to round off a bolt hahaha....

Ill have her help me install subframe spacers next week, we'll see how that goes.

I would say start her on her own car. Short easy projects up to her skill level; oil change, rotate the tires whatever. Eventually it will get to the point where you guys have your cars parked side by side with the hoods up.

It truly would be awesome if that were to happen... I'm definetly gonna put a wrench in her hand soon. ...if for nothing else than that beer that I've been promised!

you should consider your self lucky. my g/f is hella into cars, but for some CRAZY (lol) reason, she's tired of hearing about mine. guess i talked about it too much. now i kinda have to spark up a conversation that will draw me away from my second love. enjoy the time together man!

well if you are going to talk to her about your car all the time you better let her come out and let her help you with it dont be a hypocrite(sp)at least let her go out and stand with you and watch.... most of the time we just want to be involed in what you are doing!!!! let her hand you the tools and so forth but as for me i like to get dirty...i dont know everything but i am still learning and it takes a man (most of the time) to TEACH us women how to do these things (or we could sit there and read those damn manuals all day)

you idiot! let that girl help, if she wants to bad enough, heh. Who knows she could become a Nissan fanatic too, one day youll come home to an SR20DET magicially dropped in your 240! lol we all wish that, at least. Worst case she will hate working on cars and give up, best case you got another wrenching partner to go along with the sex

EDIT: Even take her out their to start, and just start teaching her the basics of how a car runs and how to maintain, if you feel nervous letting her wrench on your car with little knowledge, thats what I do and 2 out of 3 girls actually liked learning how an engine runs, the other just left me, mumbling, "stupid cars....jackass....no time for me" LOL

my girlfriend use to get angry at me all the time about the same thing "i have to hear about it all the time blah blah blah" "if you are gonna talk about it you have to teach me" etc etc. It was cool that she was acutaly interested and all.. until i had her come out in the garage with me over the winter time. "its cold" "this is boring" "can i go in now"

Now she watches tv while i work on the car.

im kind of an a55hole, so here is my suggestion.

Have her do some impossible task. Have her "help" you change the frunglowster on the bingdowl so that it is properly calibrated. Get her messy, oilly, bleeding, broken nails, chipped tooth whatever it takes to get the optimum complaints.

She will learn her lesson and kepp her a55 in the effin kitchen.

BTW, I would never do this, my girl hates cars, leases her Ford Explorer. She would also kick my a55 if I tried anything like this
