I'm a senior. Graduating this year... a rare thing nowadays. So I also decided to write a speech that I hopefully get to read aloud to the graduating class and their family members. I want to know what you all think about this.

Dear Class of 2004,

Think about the last four years. Think about what you have been doing. Now, flush away all of those thoughts and think about what you have been actually doing. Congratulations on being tools of our administration. Because of this class we have helped to make them thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars. Far more than most of you will see in your lifetime. Congratulations on graduating, on not being allowed to fail. On not being allowed to learn personal responsibility. On giving yourself an undeserved pat on the back for something you didn’t do. On your baseless human self-importance, on being fed all of the lies and half-truths of life. Congratulations on believing all of it. Your voices have been stifled, your questions cleverly avoided and your opinions given a veil of importance, all done by your beloved administration. Many of you will go on to college. You will go on and spend roughly fifty to eighty-thousand in your education, not to mention about four to five years of your life, some of you even more. After or during those years you’ll meet up with your life partner. They’ll be mediocre at best and if you’re lucky you’ll find someone who is honest and has some morals. Then you’ll get married, have one or two children, then divorce and marry again and have another one or two. Some of you will be too afraid of change and be miserable with your spouse… but hey, you’ll stay together, right? Your children will grow up and hate you for your sub-par parenting. They’ll grow up and continue the cycle of futility. Once your career gets going, you’ll find that you will be stuck at your forty thousand a year job, watching your life burn away in agony and misery. Working with co-workers who listen to uninspiring music, who try to make “small talk” so they can believe that they are unique individuals who aren’t miserable and have no friends. Your bosses will be dim-witted, inefficient and uncreative. Your job will be miserable and life draining. But again, congratulations. One day, you’ll realize that your life has spiraled down into a big ball of burning hypocrisy and you’ll wonder why you are still living. Your life to you will be miserable, your kids hate you, your spouse… heck, you wonder if your spouse is actually at work, and your job just plain sucks. One day all of this will hit you and you’ll go home and cry. Your tears will be filled with the anguish of realizing you wasted your life and at about that time you’ll have your mid-life crisis. You’ll blow your life savings on a sports car you don’t know how to drive and run off with some girl or boy in their 20’s and have some fling with them. They’ll leave you but not before draining you of money and time. Again, congratulations. So, what exactly have we learned? Absolutely. Nothing. Your lives will be uninteresting and dull. Understand that and look forward to all of it. It’ll be all you will amount to. Yes, there will be things like friends and loved ones. But those are just temporary relieves from the daily struggle to find reason to keep living. There is still no denying the fact that you are the working class. You are the ignorant and uncreative masses that need to be controlled and helped tremendously, because you fail to realize how insignificant you really are as an individual. You will make up the mundane, the bland and the dull. You will be the lost and ignored. We are the children of tragedy, tears of misfortune and the product of false hopes. Again, congratulations, I hope you look forward to your life. It’ll never be what you dreamed of. Mediocrity is your destiny so have fun.

Umm.... doubt they'll let you read that. It kinda seems like the pessimistic way to view things as well. For example, I think that I will enjoy my job in the future, and that I will find someone that is more than mediocre at best.

Just my .02 though.

how exactly is the high school administration "getting rich" off it's students? :rolleyes

jeez man relax, its not a conspiracy- no matter how much it seems you may want it to be. Why dont you grow up, go to college maybe, and learn what life is really like? Its not cool to be pessimistic anymore, and I find it ironic that you try to sound oh so creative and worldy in an essay where you claim that its impossible to even achieve that much.

Who are you trying to impress with that BS? Plenty of things are interesting, all kinds of things are worthwhile, and EVERYTHING is worth trying. Arrugh it just blows my mind to see that youve wasted so much energy thinking like that.

i was class of '03 and we actually have 4 different speeches. omg they were so BORING. one was about us being super heroes because we went through so much stuff in the past 4 years like the bombing and stuff, how we endured with our crappy faculty and school conditions. other 2 were eh... and the last one was like THEEEE WORST. i mean, she could not have talked about anything worst. shes like, "dont let procrastination get over you! you cant just walk around being lazy for the rest of your life. you have to get up and do things. stop being lazy!" most of us were in shock and confused because we didnt know who she was really talking to. at the end you give that pity clap... *clap clap*... NOW GET OFF THE STAGE kind of thing.

and IMO, no one will remember what the speaker said, or what anyone said that day as a matter of fact. the thing you will remember is how you felt that day.

I know you worked on it hard and it probably sounded good, especially late at night, but just trying to help a member out:..

It'll make you look like a tool, ..

My graduating class is a bunch of retarded morons. My school is supposedly one of the top 10 in california. Yet here I am, in a crowd of ridiculously stupid people. And I'm speaking for them... well most of them.

I wrote it in good humor and fun. Yeah, I believe some of it, the rest is sarcastic exaggeration. My english teacher loved it. And yes, the administration makes money off of you. I worked in leadership. All they do is make money off of you. All of the fund raisers they siphon off a little for themselves as "compensation" for doing the fund raisers... funny though, it's kind of in their job description to enrich kids and stuff in any way they can. And then there's also the fact that kids are worth $8/day per child. So that also adds up. The more students and better attendence they get, the better chance of getting a raise for the administration.

So it's not a conspiracy. It's just that the administration likes to take advantage of kids. Why do people think that they don't? They do. I am a living product of their lies. If you really want to know what happened to me, i'll tell you. PM me or email me.

edit- by the by, I didn't work that hard on this speech. I actually spent like 15 minutes writing it.

the only good tools are made of metal and/or in my pants!

come on mang, drop the droop and shoot some hoops!

or just look at a lot of really hot chicks, that'll make you feel more optimistic! think of chasing your dreams and a little tail while you're at it.

and end the speech with "now excuse me, but my bltches need tending, thank you"

I would leave off the "have fun" part. Seems to cheapen it. Can't say I completly agree with what you said, but it seems that deleting that part makes it seem a little more powerful. Have fun makes it sound corny. I don't know maybe it is just me.

I don't think that speech is close to being accurate. You are just another person who loves to complain about everything. THe commencement ceremony is not a place to complain about what went on in school, it's to share and remember memories with each other before you all seperate and go your seperate ways. Try thinking clearly and think of the positive things you got out of high school instead of just the bad things. Teachers and Administrators dont make that much. It is their job to teach you and ensure that you are providing regular attendance. There are tons of things to be paid for than just their personal salaries. Who doesn't want a raise anyways?

Whoa, whoa! Are you kidding? At my school we have more than a dozen teachers who make 6 figures a year! Our teachers drive like WRX's, BMW's, Mercedes, etc.

Our lowest waged administrator makes somewhere around $80,000 a year. Don't tell me that's not very much.

Oh and I go to Clovis High. It's one of the top 10 public schools in california. Though, I my school likes to throw out unsupportable figures.

I'd actually like to see more teachers make that kind of money. If you are to blame anyone though, blame every votor in the country. Our education system is lacking in so many ways. And unfortunately, they places we are lacking the most are the places that get neglected the most. In the constant move that we have been making towards stanrdized testing, education has become a joke. Why teach what people need to learn and instead, only teach what is necessary to pass these tests so that the schools can then get more money. And the reality is that the majority of people work in order to make money. So it's only natural that people will do what it takes to make more money. Unfortunately, another reality is that politicians in general do not really know what is required to really give a person a good education.

My sister will be getting into teaching soon. She is one a few people I know who really want to make a difference in the world. I am afraid she might end up like every other teacher does out there though. If she does, I won't blame her. Hard to make a difference when the people who pay you don't support what you think is right.

So, if you are that disturbed by how teachers are supposedly turning you into a tool, don't blame them. Go to the source. Go to every person who should be voting. They are the ones who truly have the power to change things. Refrain from making everyone feel like crap about their life and education. Take this energy you have and make it positive. And if you have the opportunity to speak to your class, then use that opportunity in a positive manner. Making people feel like crap is not going to be very motivating. The best motivational speakers are those that can make people feel good about doing something. It tends to create much more positive results as well.

The speech sounds similar to Tyler Durden in the movie "Fight Club". Did you watch the movie previous to writing the speech?

nope, just kind of sat around and thought about my crappy high-school experience.

Not that I'm an outcast or anything. In fact I'm very well known. Enough so that I was nominated as a candidate for "Mr. Clovis High".

It's well constructed for a first draft, and deeply sarcastic, but unless you're valedictorian, that speech would never get heard. It's also completely contradictory to what a typical valedictorian would produce. I assume this was a class assignment in sarcasm. My first impression was Al Bundy minus the humor. Sarcasm tends to be more effective with humor.

I think if you actually read that speech at graduation, your buddies would find it amusing, your family would be embarrassed, and the audience would pity you as few people actually view life that pessimistically.

Enjoy senior year.

Your big finish should be to blow your head off with a sawed off shot gun concealed in your graduation robe. Your parents would be proud.

I'm being completely sarcastic of course but too many people take high school much too seriously. In 5 years or less you won't even know anyone from your high school. In fact, you will rarely even think about high school. HS is the last vestige of childhood. You will find that you can't even begin to appreciate life until you're in your 30s.

If I could offer you only tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience...I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; Oh nevermind; you will not understand the power of beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at the photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked...You're not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing that everyday that scares you.

Sing

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind...the race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life...the most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't, maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't, maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary...whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either- your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can...don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance... even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time it's 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen...
