I had a similar experience I can share. My Q70 got rear ended two years ago. The repair bill came out to about $7,000. Although the repair job was pretty darn good, I knew the resale value of the car took a huge hit. I did some research on "diminished value" with help from a lawyer friend. Turns out you can recover "diminished value" from the at-fault driver's insurance company if you have a diminished value appraisal report that documents the loss.
The top companies on the web are Diminished Value of Georgia, Petty Details and DV Doc. After snooping around some web forums, I ended up going with DV Doc because it is the only company that offers a nifty one-page case summary which can be submitted to the small claims court. I was warned that the insurance company will often offer a lowball number (although as a legal matter, you are completely entitled to compensation) and the only way to get full $s was to take them to a small claims court. Which is exactly what happened in my case. The appraisal report said the resale value of my car took a $6500 hit and the insurance company offered only $1700 in the beginning. After I took them to the court, they upped the number to $3,500. At the small claims court, the judge who reviewed the report and the summary were very impressed and even complimented me on the case summary. I was awarded $6,000, which is very close to the original ask amount. Not bad considering that the report from DV Doc cost me $275.
