I was looking into getting a muscle car in a year or two as a project. I was wondering what were some good cars from back in the day. I'd want something that looks good and can put down some power. I probably want a 60's or early 70's coupe. I also need to be able to find the car for a few grand, and then take a few years to restore it. I just love the sound, power and looks of the old cars, but also love my Nissans. :) My uncle let me drive his 68 Camaro and that just made me want one of these cars even more.

Its not a muscle car, but a Mazda Rx-3 or a 240z.

The old Z cars are nice, but I'm looking for some V8 power. Maybe in the future I'll pick up a Z to restore.

my favorite muscle car is the 67 Nova. It had a factory weight of 2800 lbs and can accept any V8 motor. Light and fast. Huge aftermarket also..

Other favorites are 68-70 Chargers, 69 GTO, and 70 Chevelle

Theres too many options when looking at the late 60s for a muscle car, and even the early 70s.

One muscle car I love thats going around town, a fella i know owns it. Its a mid to late 60s Acadian with a totally built engine, not sure what it is but it can handle quite a shot of nitrous.

but the sound of it alone is rivalled only by my 96 TA ;)

AMC Javelin is a sleeper muscle car and can be had for a song. Some of them had blocks up to 390's/401's depending on the year. They're not common and might be worth a second look if you find one in halfway decent shape (IF being the operative word - quality control was not a strength of AMC.)

Personally I'd take a '68 Camaro SS or '71 Mach 1, but neither of those can be found cheaply anymore. Ditto Kingfish/Challenger/Charger. The ones that are cheap around here are pretty much basket cases that need tons of body work.

I know this is a very general question, but just trying to get some ideas of what cars people like. After I get some names of some muscle cars, I'm going to do some researching and see what ones I personally like and can find in half way decent shape. Just brainstorming right now and my dad was excited when I said something about getting some old american muscle, but he loves my Nissan too. Would it be possible to drop a small V8 into a 280zx? I found a '76 280zx for $500, and it's in pretty good shape too.

It's a 280z, not 280zx. Oopsie.

It's been done before...check out http://www.hybridz.org

Many engines will fit in the Z's bay, including the RB series.

EDIT: 350 SBC is a common swap into the early Z chassis.

GTO from 68 to 72 was IDENTICAL (mechanically) to the Skylark, Chevelle, LeMans, Special and Cutlass. They're ALL GM A-Body cars, and none was more likely to require work than any other of them.

Rousie - The small-block into a 240 / 260 / 280z is one of the most common swaps EVER. Do some searching on the web - You'll find tons of info. A 260 with a built SBC is a bad-a$$ car... and cheap to build!

Nice car, but what is it exactly? I don't know the body styles of a lot of the old cars, but I'm trying to learn the classics.

Sammy: Sorry about the car your ex made you sell. Thats one thing no one will ever make me do, sell one of my cars. My cars are my pride and joy. I'm only 19, unmarried, and just starting my car collection, so I'm probably a little naive on the power of a wife. :bowdown lol

By the way, I called about that 280z and just waiting to hear back from the guy. If it's in pretty good shape, I'm gettin me a 280.

There are lotsa good choices. Depends what you're partial to and how much you want to spend. I've always been partial to old Chevy's: older Vettes, 1st generation Z-28's, the 1970 1/2 split bumper camaros are beautiful. I have a good friend who's restoring a 69 Moosetang GT convertible with a 390, 4 barrel and 4 speed. Sweet car, great sound. He also has a Boss 429 which is ridiculously fun and fast (in a straight line, of course). What are you leaning toward?
