At this poing I'm not leaning towards anything. I'm just researching and looking at my options. I've gotten some good ideas of cars to look into though from this post. I saw a 69 or 70 cuda coupe that I fell in love with. I would love to find one of those to restore. I also love the old shelby 500 mustangs, but those are hard to find and probably cost a fortune, even if it needs to be restored. But it's going to be a little while before I decide and purchase a car.

If you decide on a mustang and want to spend less money get a 71-73 model. Cheap and all sorts of build abilty. 69-70 mustangs are very expensive to restore averaging twice as much for parts than other mustang options. I am a Huge fan of the 68-72 Dodge Dart. They are cheap can handle a Hemi and look sweet. :batman

I think ANY year Corvette are the best, but especially 53-79, I love the stingrays(62-88 i think, could be wrong) nice 427, 383, u know, the car is VERY light, very fast even with a stock 350.

From what I've been hearing, these are supposed to be going up in value significantly in the coming years, some doubling. If you can swing it, now's the time to snatch them up. My auto teacher has a 66 Stingray. Beautiful, and ALL original, even the factory AC compressor still works well.

The car I really want is a 1961 Pontiac Catalina. It was the car my dad always wanted when he was younger. He restored one when I was a kid, and I grew up in it. Sold it a few months before I turned 16. That's something I'll never forgive. ;) They're pretty damn rare, but I will have one someday.

The Corvette's will always go up in value.I just sold my 1974 454 4-speed Stingray. The trick is to not sell it untill you get the project compleat or near finished at least.I still needed a paint job, interior, and a few other odds and ends.I got what I paid of it but could have gotten more if I had tried. With the Vette you get into a group of hard core people.Much like the "Z" or "Harley" club. Its a nice feeling that I do miss a bit.

Well I have restored (well my family) a 68 Chevelle SS 396, a 66 Buick Skylark, and a 53 Chevy truck, so I know a little about this crap. A good starting point would be decide on either a size or a make. Either go with a pony car (camaro, trans-am, mustang) or go with the big block stuff. It would be wise to decide on a make like Chevy, Ford or Dodge and then go from there. Also, don't be fooled by some of the names. I would lover to restore a superbird or a roadrunner. And, please dont dismiss something from the 30's and 40's hmmmmmmm. Like a chopped and dropped mercury! Good luck, there are a million cars out there, but just remember, there are so many people into this hobby that finding a good candidate for restoration is getting harder and harder to find. Also, watch the shows they air on TNN sat and sun mornings. They will give a lot of good information.

I second the V8-240/260/280Z

You can't beat that power to weight ratio with a V8 in any other car.

my personal favorite muscle car used to be the 1970 boss mustang 302. then it turned to the 71 dodge charger. but umm well newayz u can pretty much build any 60s and 70s car to have a lot of power. just make sure it has a v8. and also one of my personal favorites are the mustang fastbacks. sweetest cars ever made. i wud go either chevy or ford. ford is sumwhat cheaper because quite a few companies remanufacture ford blocks such as the 302, 306 and 308. chevys are prety easy too. a sweet sleeper would be a 67 impala convertible with a C4. o yea . or well another great sleeper but extremely rare would be the 64 lincoln continental 4 door convrtible. beautiful and extremely sexy pimpmobiles.

If you are looking for a sleeper i have one for sale. 1961 Ford Falcon Coupe, This is a very light car and great for dropping a big V8 of anykind into. I have seen some really fast Falcons. I will post a pic of it tonight when i get home from work. I am very partial to the old z cars and some of the 60's mustangs. Also this might kinda sound wierd but I love a 70's MG-B with a aluminum block V-8, Fast as ****.

My cousin has had two old falcons...those are cool little cars (despite the anemic 6 cylinder that comes stock in them)

Doesn't sound wierd to me...I was planning to do the swap into my MGB a while ago, but the Rover 3.5 V8's weren't easy to come by back then and were expensive as hell. Plus I got annoyed with the B and sold it, bought a S13 instead.

That is a mean little car, tho', with the V-8. Incredible handling and great power all in one package. A roll bar + V8 = instant club racer. Unfortunately, it will still share the MG's tendency to spontaneously break down/catch fire/disobey its owner whenever a single nut is loose.

I'm gonna try to put a pic of my malibu in here but I don't know if it will work since I have never tried to attach an image before.I've had the car for a few years and I don't even really drive it that much anymore because of the cops around here, but any malibu,el camino, regal, cutlass,or any other g or a body gm car are good candidates for a hot rod cause they are'nt so old that they are all rusted and they are full frame cars that are still pretty light and can be had for a fair price.

The 86-87 Grand National would be my pick. The SFI fuel injected/DIS ignition 3.8L intercooled turbo V6 is a great high tech engine (yes I said high tech...ahead of it's time)! They are fairly fast as is in stock form running in the low 14's. But could run 13's almost by accident! I ran 14.00@99mph with a very stock GN V6 in my 88 Trans Am GTA (open diff and street tires).

The 67-69 Camaro/Firebirds are great cars to build. One of the best looking muscle cars IMO. The 60's/early 70's Chevelles and Chevy II/Nova's are also very nice. The Pontiac Tempest/LeMans/GTO, Buick Skylark/GS and the Olds Cutlass/442 all make awesome project cars! Plus as someone mentioned before they are all the same car mechanically. They will take any GM V8 but you might look into the Buick/Olds/Pontiac V8's instead of the traditional Chevy SB/BB V8.

The 68-72 Dodge Chargers are great looking cars as well as a few other Mopars, such as the Plymouth Barricuda and Duster. Also don't leave out the Ford Fairlane or the 60's Mustangs. :ylsuper
