I find it pathetic that they say its not attrative in the hatch form. The Honda Fit looks like a stinking clown car!!! And the Versa has a much better interior!

Motor Trend is a joke. I got a free subscription to it so I started reading it again...it's really horrible. It is quite literally a giant ad. The articles all look and read like ads. The photos are all cheesey and shiny and take up more pages than the articles. The have no taste in automobiles and just give whatever is newest all the awards. Hell, it was Motor Trend that gave the Ridgeline, a car, the Truck of the Year award in 2006. WTF? Yeah, don't take anything they say to heart.

And I agree, the Fit is hideous. The 1st gen was ugly, and the new one is even worse.

Why should you care what they think? You bought the car and you like it right? If everyone cared what everyone else thinks of their car we'd all be driving a Prius.

To be honest, there are cars that look better than the V. The Versa is kind of bland and normal looking.

I thought it was a pretty accurate assessment of the vehicle.

I agree too! I bought the car because I liked it, not anybody else.

The review sounds about right. Price point and interior roominess were our deciding price point. Styling certainly was not, but all those cars look about the same to me.

Oh, I definitely didn't intend any comment against you for reading the magazine. Just pointing out that magazines aren't always right.

......we have had this discussion before...the idea being that certain car companies and cars are favored......accusations of magazine publications being paid off...........the one thing that nissan has to improve on the v is the front grille......make it look like a tiida grille and it's all good my feeling. i know there are bumper safety standards but the grille isn't the bumper last time i looked. they can do something with it..where is the tiida built in central and south america anyone know?

The Tiida grille is definitely miles ahead of the versa grille. I don't know what Nissan's obsession with huge chunky plastic grilles is in the US but they appear to be the only ones not aware of the negative impact it has on their products' images.
Mile High Versa wrote:Prius < Insight
Yeah, I agree. The Prius costs significantly more and gets poor highway mileage due to it's abominable power to weight ratio (less than 100hp above 4000rpm and it weighs 3700lb) combined with the electric assist's uselessness at highway speeds...which means all that hybrid crapola is just dead weight. The Insight is simpler and has a more powerful gas engine so highway milage is probably superior to the Prius'...which is what really matters for most north american drivers. Plus with the price difference between the two...$4000 goes a long way toward gas, especially at 40+ mpg.

I've actually test driven both the new Insight and the new Prius. The Insight doesn't really have a more powerful gasoline engine... they both get 98 hp, although at different rpms.

The Prius actually drives more like a normal car on the highway now, which is to be expected as the Prius has quite a bit more combined torque and hp.

I think the Insight has a good market position - as it is currently undercutting the Prius' price. But as for driving? Automotive journalists who claim the Insight is the "driver's" hybrid must be high on crack. The suspension is just rougher and the car less insulated so it feels "sporty" - but take it on a controlled course and the Prius' bad performance beats the Insight's pathetic performance.

But getting back on topic... in re the ugly Versa bumper... we can thank the failure of the Japan/EU/US to get together and create a standard set of safety regulations.

Eh, that hasn't stopped the goofy european pedestrian impact bumper standards from affecting the designs of world-market cars. Such a terrible idea...how about instead of making pedestrian impact safer...why not teach people not to WALK INTO TRAFFIC?! Such backward problem solving. I don't want to have anything to do with Japanese or European safety regulations. All 3 regions have their areas of idiocy; combine them all and you've got a fully completed trifecta of suck.

The standards aren't the problem per se - it is when the original designers have to slap together a new bumper on a tight budget when they want to introduce an existing design in another jurisdiction.

Oh my god LOL. The Versa sedans have to be the plainest looking car since the 80's. I'm still wondering why they still sell/build them.

To be honest the Versa is by no means an outstanding looking car, yes you can do things to spoof it up. But imho the Versa is no eye candy nice appealing looking Ferrari. I love it though, and yes to agree with the first repy the honda fit looks like a piece of s***, especially from the back I feel like I'm looking at a wagon minivan cross over that went horribly wrong.

I'm like some other people replying to this thread, I don't care what Motor Trend says about anything. I quit reading that magazine when they voted the Chevrolet Impala 'Car of the Year' back around 1994 or 1995. I'm not talking about the Impala SS, they voted just the plain old Impala as Car of the Year. That car was garbage and they clearly showed their bias. Just my opnion. By the way, I bought and am enjoying he Versa sedan.

Motor Trend forgets that there is a modding crowd for the V. It looks a heck of a lot better with aftermarket rims, lowering springs, exhaust and tinted windows. They have no excuse giving the V a bad name when there are cars out there that are far worse as terms in quality.

I disagree. I think the Versa looks just fine stock and in my opinion, looks worse when lowered. Kind of silly, actually. Many of the aftermarket rims make the Versa look odd. Too spindly, narrow, an off color making it look overwhelming for the design of the car, creating too much attention to what should be a balanced look.

My $.02.

That sounds like something Red Devil would say, no offense. I still have my stock wheels for the winter!

None taken.

Many owners here have rims, lowering kits installed and other mods so they would disagree with me as well.

Motor Trend isn't in the business of reviewing specific mods, its subjective opinion on the Versa's appearance is based on a comparison between vehicles with only OEM parts.

The latter part of your comment makes no sense at all. Why would Motor Trend need an excuse to give an unflattering subjective opinion on the appearance of a vehicle? It is what they do for a living.

And what does quality have to do with physical appearance being subjectively reviewed?

Should an automotive journalist suddenly say that a Toyota Land Cruiser looks better than a Aston Martin DB9 because the Land Crusier is more reliable?

We've already bought the car - enjoy it. Who cares if other people reviewed it the same way you did.

I never said Motor Trend is reviewing mods on the Versa. I'm saying that the Versa looks better than it does stock. Their opinion is moot, I think the Versa looks fine the way it is stock or with aftermarket parts I just happen to like my V with mods.

They are obviously biased toward Nissan, for who knows what reason. Maybe, they don't like the way Nissan designs their vehicles on the outside or they're just too dang picky. I don't care what they have to say or offer. There are plenty of other magazines I can subscribe to besides them, if I choose to do so.

So, you say who cares if other people reviewed it the same way I did? Well, then I don't care how Motor Trend thinks of the appearance on the Versa.
