I have seen many threads about modifying the DVD Nav system to play DVDs while care is moving, but has anyone figured out how to do that with the DVD player in the consol?

Is there really a difference. Whether or not you are wanting to play a DVD from the center console DVD drive or video in from behind the center console, the GPS and E-brake keep you from seeing video.

Apart from these two ways to see video, what is there? I've seen a question like this recently. Am I missing something here? I don't have MES in my M so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

The hack you've seen should also allow you to use the DVD player in the console.

Well one reason is then you can leave the NAV DVD in its appropriate player, and don't have to swap CDs to change form one to the other, basically the same reason they have two DVD players in the car.

Secondly I have the upgraded 14 Speaker surround sound system that does sound in dolby 5.1 surround, I question whether it will play in surround sound from the NAV player, and it does from the center consol player.

So the hack you saw was using the NAV DVD in the glove compartment? Can you post a link to this hack? That's a new one on me. What I've read so far put switches in to make the car think the E-brake was on and that the car wasn't moving. They didn't use the NAV DVD in the glove box.

If you have the tech pkg with the 5.1 (which I do) and have the DVD-Audio drive in the center console (which I do), you have what you need and don't need to mess with the NAV DVD unit. Hacks cause you to mess with wires around your NAV DVD unit but didn't expect you to put the DVD movie disk into the NAV DVD unit.

This is the thread I saw: zerothread?id=139095 and when you get near the bottom someone asks about whether it was done to the glove box or consol, it seems like it was the glove box, though there is some confusion there..

I have the same setup as you I think, tech package dvd audio, and I am trying to acommplish two things, 1 allow dvds to play "show" while driving, and two allow the Nav controls to work while driving.

I see the confusion then. Since I have the DVD in the center console, I've never been tempted to put a DVD movie in the NAV unit. That thread seems to raise some confusion as to which unit it's for.

Since we have the DVD in the center console, we should have no need for using the NAV unit.

The concept of the hack is to: 1. make the car think the E-brake is on 2. make the GPS think the car's not moving

With our setup (I have tech/journey/aero) we can watch video on the front screen when: 1. the E-brake is engaged 2. The car isn't moving

So since the hack inserts switches to turn on/off the E-brake signal and the GPS signal, we should be in business with our DVD unit in the center. And then you would have 5.1 sound just like you would if you were sitting still with the E-brake on today.

Part of the confusion on this is that some people, that don't have the tech package with 5.1, want to switch off the GPS signal so they can mess with the NAV systems at speed. So people with and without are hitting those threads asking similar questions but wanting different but similar solutions.

Hope that helped. I haven't done this hack since I'm leasing (won't do that again) so I'm not the specialist on this topic but was hoping to pass along what I'd learned so far.

Maybe someone else that's done this hack will chime in with the definitive answer.

Yes, i think you have confirmed where the confusion is, so I will sit patiently waiting to see of someone with both players has done the hack..

I also have leased but I really don't care, my last inifniti lease I changed things and they didnt say anything when I returned it. And it seems this hack may be able to be changed back after, as long as you dont drill a hole in the consol for the switch, I will just stick it under the steering wheel or something.

Dumb question, but are there 5.1 surround sound music DVDs and does the CD player play 5.1 surround? I have the tech package but have yet to enjoy any surround sound music. Would love to get some for travel. Any comments appreciated.

The CD player in the dash will not play 5.1 surround, If you have the DVD player in the center consol it will, and you have two options, you can either get DVD's which many artists have mostly of their concerts though. Many of them are in 5.1 surround, once you start driving the video goes away but it will keep playing the surround sound.

There is also something out there called DVD-Audio which is basically audio disks on DVDs they are not that common, I couldn't find any at the record store I went to, but I found a website that sells them and had a decent selection of top music.

I am sure there may be others..

Most concert DVDs have a bunch of fans cheering through the surround speakers. You can play these on our 5.1 systems but there's not much of a surround experience.

DVD-Audio is where you'll find the BOSE system shine! Many DVD-Audio disks are of concerts as jddux said. You should have been given the 5.1 demo disk from the dealer. It has some good songs (of a vast variety) to show off the 5.1 system with some distinct surround mixes. I've picked up 10 DVD-Audio disks so far. Some work in sound that move around you and some disks are just clearer due to the higher sample rate of the recordings.

It's true that the local stores don't have much offerings for DVD-Audio or SACD(which won't play in our 5.1 system). You'll do best to go online. You'll get some good reviews that way since people can say whether or not it is worth it for a particular disk.
