I made most of these black and white because all the rust and differences in light mess up the cameras light metering and white balance. Almost all of them look weird unedited.

Here are two of them as they look direct from the camera.

Nice! I suppose that when I look at photographs, I want to see what it would look like had I been there. I want the camera to be my eyes.

For landscapes and people I would agree with minimal post processing. For stuff like this that is more common, it's always fun to see someone's artistic take on the scene.

Yeah. Landscapes and the like are better off minimally edited. IMO, pictures taken in abandoned places should evoke some sort of emotion.

That's why I like dark shadows and a sense of desolation and confinement.

I found some information about the mill.

It used to be a grist mill until around 1810. After that, It began producing cotton yarn. It was open long before this, however.

This lead to the construction of a cotton factory totaling $9,000.

By the time The War of 1812 rolled around, the owner of the mill (I can't give away too much information) was commissioned a Captain. Part of the factory was used for training the troops.

In 1843, the mill was bought by the Babcock family (an influential name in the area). They built an addition to the mill in 1847, making the building complex quite a bit larger.

In 1889, the mill was bought by another company, eventually employing over 200 workers. The factory produced fine cashmere wool.

The mill had been owned by yet another company for an undisclosed number of years. It closed in 1958... so abruptly that yarn is still mounted on some of the machines. The buildings were left. Not other use has come to them other to just stand there and rot. A small fire burned a part of one of the buildings around 10 years ago.

It is now privately owned by someone who lives in New York state.

I love history like this.

Newgate has actually been on my list of places to go for a while now. I'll most likely head out there this summer.

1) the floor falls through and i die a bloody splintered death or 2) some 'ghost adverturers' type crap starts happening where random unseen entities start grabbing me or i hear whispers in my ear.

I'm just hoping she continues to blame ghosts. That's the sort of criminal record I don't want...
