I have been in the AF for 5 years. Its cool......until you get stuck in North Dakota. Sometimes I wish I had went in the Navy. My family got "stuck" in San Diego, Cali for 15 years!!!! Talk about horrible....:pface. All the services have there ups and downs. Like I hear in the navy it is easier to move around. Marines make rank quicker (I hear) and the army....well I dont know. I chose the AF basically because my dad was in the navy (retired e8) and I was 17 so he had to sign my release or whatever. He didnt like the jobs they offered, so I went in the AF. I got a cool job that makes good money on the outside. My ONLY advice to you is whatever service you choose either 1)pick a job you would do on the outside or 2)pick an easy job that will allow you to go to school without the added stress. Like me, I carry a pager EVERYWHERE I GO just in case something happens on base where I gotta go respond to it. And my job is knowledge intensive. I still dont know all of it. Kinda sucks. Now if I pushed papers all day, I could chill out and focus on my studies. So that is my advice to you. And if you do go AF, DONT LET THE RECRUITER TALK YOU INTO GOING OPEN GENERAL. You WILL get screwed. My job, or COP, or worse services (ie flipping pancakes) LOL

easy job=admin

3A0X13S0X14A0X13C0X1-computer. They cant keep anyone in. Their reenlistment bonus is high as ****

thoe above are AFSC (Air Force Specialty Codes...in other words, code for your job. Tell the recruiter you want an admin job. There are more easy ones, but it is late and I cant think

There are more, I cant think. My job is basically OSHA and EPA to the civilian world. Check water, protedct workers...blah blah blah. Money is good. But in the Air Force you have to know alot. In te civilian world, my job is **** easy

admin is a good way to go.. i got communications... i got lucky and got my first choice: computer systems operations... basically networking comps... if you score high on your asvab... 96+... you can take a special test to be a programmer called ADPT test... if you make a 71 you get 7 g's sign on bonus.. plus...... 60g's for a re-enlistment bonus... course i did try and i got a 65..... oh well.... but anyways do something with computers.

i just finish talking to one of my friend that is in the marine, the stuff he's telling me is kinda different to the stuff the recuriter is telling me about, but after all he's in the MARINE and the recuriter is in the AF so i dont know if it's the same or not. So i want to ask a couple of question to the AF people see if it's the same that the recuriter told me about.

Well the recuriter said in the AF people get their own rooms and you can decorate it any way you want.

My friend just told me to ask ya do ya have to clean everyday? He said he have to and if not he'll get in trouble. He otta clean his room, bathroom, the floor, toilet bowl..etc.

My friend said if i want to go in for college i should ask my recuriter more about college assistance. Well my recuriter so far told me that i get 100% tuition assistance=free schooling, so what about the books and stuff? And what else should i ask for?

please tell me more stuff i should know or i should ask because i really want to get everything down before i sign the paper. thanks.

LIE...j/k it works sometimes. If they can get you to a base of your choice, they will, but as you will find out..the needs of the military come FIRST.

You Do have inspections in the dorms, but they are announced EXCEPT for morale checks (ie dogs come a with the 5-0 and look for drugs, wepaons, etc) It aint bad. Its a check. I make like 900 every two weeks. NO rent. NO utilities except DSL Cable, etc. No car payment. I pay out the *** in daycare because my wife is in the AF too. But it isnt bad. There is BS just like every other place, it is only enhanced in the military because you cant quit:( . Even if you do 4 yrs and get out, you cant beat someone taking 1200 bucks and givign you 30,000+ for school....I should be a recruiter. Plus howmany jobs will TEACH you and keep you certified and PAY you. Before I reenlisted, I was going to get out. i filled out online resumes and I got a call 30 minutes later...no ****. 30,000 starting. no degree. just my 4 yrs experience. Unfortunately my wife joined and we got stuck in North Dakota. Iw ould be chilling in Sand Diego sun right now....oh welll:( :( :( :( :(

Im in the Navy myself, and from what i understad, its the easiest to advance. I heve been in for 2 and a half years and an E-5. It is also the branch if you want to se the world. The only real problem i have found is leaving home for 6 months at a time. But even then, you are visiting places like hawaii, Guam, Singapore, Birain, Oman, Astraila, Victoria, Porta Virta.

I hate you.:D I was SOOOOO close to going in the Navy. My mom was in, my dad was in, my step dad was in, my uncle was in (all navy). I wanted to stay in San Diego so bad. I was going to be Dental and I think my technical training was in SD. My dad wouldnt let me. He was like, do you wanna look in dirty mouths all day??? I couldnt hang with the west pac **** either though. My step dad was always gone. It was cool though because we didnt like him anyway:rolleyes

2 1/2 yrs and E5 already. i just sewed on in May and June is my 5 yr mark. geez. I made it my first time though. Did you go in with any rank or were you E1??? I started from the bottom. The AF is cool. If you are single, the Navy is real cool. Get to travel and make money. Except for those small racks on the ship....no way for me LOL

Either way man........ i've never heard one person complain about being in the air force. pick your recruiters brain man. find out all the info you can, ask tough question, make him print up graphs and ****... i made my recruiter bend over backwards getting info. just remember when it does come to job time..... list only the jobs you want.. even if they ask you to choose more. don't. and read over that contract. once you sign it...... you're theirs. ask about sign on bonuses and re-enlistment bonuses..... make your recruiter find all this out.... don't let him be lazy. he's there to give you info.

I am 17 and just joined the army and leave for boot in Aug. I joined army because it is so big there is tons of jobs. The marines i was told you dont get to choose your job and i didnt want that. The navy i didnt want to be on a ship but think it is a great branch. The Af i had a major problem with the recruiter and wanted to be down on the ground with the infantry. For the car question i heard from one of my recruiters that you should take your car with you exspecially if want to bring one back. I guess the army will pay for one to come back if you take one over. my 240 is going with me. I am a combat engineer by the way. and the 13 weeks marine thing, maybe the boot camp is 9 weeks but his other training is 4. I have 9 weeks of boot and 6 weeks of training. i am at fort leonardwood for 15 weeks. Good luck. The only advice i can give you is go to all the branches and listen to all the recruiters even if you are not thinking at all about that branch. Sometimes the recruiters do lie so if you listen to all of them talk about each other you have a good chance of picking out the truth. Oh they have a video of all the jobs so sit there and watch them, i did for like 2 hours :). Good luck, keep us posted

I've said it twice already, maybe YamaOni will clarify for you all, since he was in the Marines, how long their bootcamp is.

But like gibbo said, talk to all of the branches if your not sure. All of them have jobs to pick from... and, yeah, recruiters aren't always the most truthful, nor do they know everything.

Marine boot camp is definitely 13 weeks, not 9, and you CAN pick your job in the marines, as in any other service. No, you don't just pick "east, west, or overseas" unless those are the only available stations for your mos. Generally, you fill out a "dream sheet" upon completion of MOS school, of the top 3 duty stations you want to go to. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't.

I am in the Navy and I joined at the begining of my senior year in the Delayed Entry Program. Basically you get to advance to paygrade E2 while you finish High school if you go to some stupid meetings. Also if you can get 2 people to sign-up you can move up another pay grade. I leave for boot camp in September and get to stay in Great Lakes, IL for 9 weeks before going to A school for the Advanced Electronics Computer Field. From there I get a choince of whether I want to be a Electronics Technician or a Firecontrolman. I think it is a good opportunity for people to discover what they want to do with their lives after high school rather than going of to college, or in my case do awesome on the ASVAB and never let my grades reflect that. An added bonus is there are a **** load of college options you can do while your in and after you get out. Plus I got a sign on bonus that will cover an SR swap and a paycheck every month to really build up my 240.

I think the biggest plus of the military is the opprotunties. Sure everyone can order parts from Japan. But what better way to build your car than to get stationed there??? Who better to let work on your RB25 swap than the master's??? That is my goal. I have been trying to get to Japan for 3 years. If so, I will take my 240 with me and get that ***** decked out. And you make a TON of money especially if you have family
