good for you guys. That is the only real regret I have in life. Not being in shape enough to go into the service when I came out of high school.

what are you talking about?

I'm not in shape right now.

but I have the ability to change that.

I probably could've gone out of high school though...

of all the areas of service, i would take the air force over them all. they treat the soldiers good, and if you're lucky, you can get stationed in the SG-C LOL

No, no Billy Bob. When I say not in shape, I mean not in shape. Which I am trying to correct that problem. It will take me awhile, but I will get there.

my girlfriend's dad is a master chief sargeant posted out at langley air base. he gets the fun job of testing AF teams in how they handle certain situations. Quite fun. One of his favorite stunts is to pull one member of the team out, send him to the cars with the keys to turn the AC on, and then see how long it takes the team to realize he's gone "AWOL" during the exercise

my brother is in the navy, hes been stationed in west virginia, new york, now hawaii. he has owned two rx7 turbo II while in the service. at first he was stationed at the barracks for his schooling phase. now hes in the working phase, if that makes any sense. he lives in a government building thats like a big dorm... or at least thats what it seems from what he tells me. when hes not working, he gets to go out ie clubbing, bars, surfing

If you can deal with the constant relocations, then military life is great. I really don't like moving around, but thats what the reserves are for...:)

i don't know why i'm bothering to type this, i could just tell you at work, i guess it's for everyone else. i am planning on going into the air force too, but i will be an officer.

some perks- very nice gym, free; theater, dirt cheap; grocery store, dirt cheap; auto shop, ie diy mechanic, dirt dirt cheap; free flights anywhere an AF plane is going, which is basically everywhere; 30 days paid vacation in your first year, at least for officers; unlimited sick days, assuming you're actually sick, excellent benefits/medical coverage, excellent pension, paid housing. also, they will pay for your college degree or a graduate degree or they will teach you how to fly, (even if you aren't a pilot, i hope they would teach the pilots how to fly). you can ship your car to your new base overseas and ship it home for free, it doesn't have to be the same car though, you can ship over a clunker and bring back a JDM silvia or euro e36 m3 without paying a hefty markup or import taxes. this may be only for officers again.

as for the other stuff, i was told that they like to keep you in one place for about 3 years. but maybe that's just officers. either way i don't mind that much, when i was in college i moved every semester, it was a pain in the *** but i'm used to it. and assuming you aren't in a war zone, having a car shouldn't be a problem.

to become an officer you have to go one of several routes, go to the AF acadamy, go through AF ROTC in college, go to officer training school after getting a 4 year degree (what i am doing), or go through an officer program after being enlisted for a few years. their may be others but i'm not sure, generally you have to have a college degree of some sorts. and all the pilots are officers i believe.

I might have to. Either AF or CG.

But god I don't want to. I need to make a decision in the next month or so. I thought I had a great job lined up, but I don't know if it's going to pan out.

I don't want to go. bleh.

Yeah, the reserves are great for keeping you in the same place...until they activate you and send you for a tour or two in Iraq.

Now I really regret it, i'm not my old self and I am 20 now. But the past 2 weeks I have been working out every single day and it feels great being sore all over :). and I have talked to a recruiter, I told him I'll let him know when I was ready lol. And I will go and let him know sometime end of next month :).

ROTC at a university is a good way to go. All service members get 30 days paid leave.

I notice there aren't too many guys wanting to sign up for the infantry. Wonder why.

FYI, I read an article about Air Force and Navy guys getting seconded to Army units and going you know where. It's voluntary right now but you know how things are going.

The army likes 'em young. Blank slates easier to train than dogs. Thing about being a teenager is that life at that stage is all about trying to fit in with a pier group. The Army/Marines (infantry) play this angle to the max. Good luck to your bro.

I watched this show on Nova a couple of years back about life on an aircraft carrier. To the producers credit, they showed this miserable sailor who had wanted to do something exciting or at least interesting. They handed him a mop and all he did all day, day after day, was clean up people's crap. Well, somebody has to do it, don't they? That guy was one unhappy camper muttering to himself and swearing to get even with the recruiter who signed him up. He never saw the deck of the ship unless he was off duty.

The bad thing about the military it that they can throw you in jail if you don't show up for work. I turned down a direct entry with the rank of sargeant into a Canadian military band just on that and I come from a military family.

The good thing is that you can serve your country and retire with a decent pension after 20 years. Just hope you don't get some kind of dolt as commander in chief sending you into harms way for no good reason. Oops! got political there for a second.

This thread bothers me because so many young people these days are saying "gosh, I didn't make much of myself, couldn't do the school thing, working is so hard..might as well join the military and cash in on the free everything"

I know a guy who thought just that. He'll be heading to Iraq in Sept and is crying a river about it. Saying he didn't sign up for this. Yes he did. He signed up because he didn't want to work in construction, he had nothing, made nothing of himself up to that point, and couldn't for the life of him see himself ever being successful without the lifetime tax free benefits from joining the Army. Now, reality is setting in for him.

The military shouldn't be the final scapegoat for teens and early twenties kids who haven't put a life together on their own. I speak on this from what I see, working and living in a town with two military installations within 5 minutes of each other. Every day I see military personnel with the same look on their face. Just got some cash in hand, got a good deal at the Kia dealership(the largest in the nation, true story, thanks to the two military bases nearby) and they now want to blow every last dollar on wheels for their economy car. Each story has different minor details, but the theme is always the same. It's a theme that started well before they joined the military: barely squeaking by on their income, not planning ahead, unhappy with the consequences.

Benefits packages and vacation time should NOT be the criteria by which you choose your career.

Cliff Notes Don't join as a last resort. You just might regret that choice, too.

Hey Smith, That isn't me. I regret not going, because I feel I am not serving my country the way I should. I have an excelent job, and may be getting a supervisor position in the next month. I just feel that so many are doing their duty, where as I am not.

I guess you could say I am almost ashamed that I did not join the military. But it is pretty much out of the question at this stage of my life. I don't know, maybe that is why I have stayed in public service. I don't care for it, but maybe I can do some honor to my country by doing what I do.

I dont know. Sorry for the ramble.

PS I know a lot do go in because it is a last resort. but maybe, it will make them a better person. And certainly give them skills they can use.

whatcho talkin' bout?

You can serve your country fine by just being and upright guy and someone I'd be proud to call an American.

Patriotism is like chicken, there's more then one way to serve it.
