How do you know it's 'jacked'?

You can't put any other sensor on, but the one that came with your car, unless you're ECU is retuned for that specific MAF.

it has a weird smell everyonce in a while, and sometimes when i stop at stop signs it shuts off. the guy i work for who is teaching to be a machanic thinks thats what it is. but i also read here on NICO that improperly changed oil filters can make a bad connection on your MAF. my oil filter dont leak or anything so i thinks just bad and i was gana get one from a 300zx non turbo but i wanted to make sure first.

Your oil filter has nothing to do with your MAFs

You need to buy one from the same model car, if its for a SOHC 240, you need a MAF from an SOHC 240, if its for an S14 240, you need a MAFs for an S14, and so on and so forth. If you want to run a different sensor than what the car came with, then you need a retune.
