Ok, so I was thinking to myself; why arent my tips chrome? I mean Infiniti is a luxury brand, and they should have put some extra quality into the car. So I looked at the tips closely, after I washed them, and cleaned them, and they still looked crappy. To cut the story short, I tried some steel wooll. This stuff is cheap, and cleans almost every metal. Look at the resultsBefore and after side by side

You could actually work it on down to some really fine sandpaper and get them to be VERY shinny.

I still like mine better:

No, I don't have any equipment to do so.

I can tell you it sounds like a 350Z, only it's a bit louder. Sounds great.

The tips are legal anywhere.

The rest of what I did is not legal in your state as you won't pass inspection without cats. There is no inspection here so pretty much anything goes.

I don't know the full cost as I've pieced it together over some time. I spent about $20 on the 2 resonator to replace the cats, probably $80 each on the magnaflow mufflers to replace the mid mufflers, and another $20 each on the rear resonators (to tone it down a little, had a little too much drone on the inside for my wife's liking.), and the tips were about $60 for both. (That's a guess, I don't really remember. They are Magnaflow tips. I found them on ebay.) Plus whatever my muffler shop guy charged me to install it all.

If I were to do it again, I'd take the two tips to the muffler shop and have him take the suitcase muffler off the rear and run two pipes out the back and put the tips on. You could probably get all that done for about $100-$150.

What grit sandpaper did you use?

It need to be FINE sandpaper, like 2000 grit or finer (3000-5000) or even emery cloth.

Here's a few more pictures of the rest of it:

The front resonators replacing the cats:

front view of the 2 magnaflows:

rear view of the magnaflows. The two resonators I had put on where not on at the time of these pictures. They are installed on the straight part right after the 2 mufflers.

view from the rear:

The only thing I have that will record video is my wife's camera. I'll see if I can get something up sometime.

So I went to the hardware store, and they said they dont have 5000 grit sandpaper BUT, I ran into an auto detailer. He said, rub them with WD40, then use 600 grit, wipe off WD, then Spray again, use 800, and keep going up till 1510 grit, then use mother's chrome polish. He said they should look brand new. Il try it out one I go to the autoparts store.

I took off that back muffler and just replaced it with tips that look very similar to your tips gr8scott. ($90 installed) wouldn't do it again though, the setup was too loud for my taste. not sure if that is how you post pics? (never tried it before).... this is a pic taken after it had been broken down for about 6 months so that explains the dirt

Nothing you do to these cars short of adding a turbo or two will add alot of power.

Simple? Think again. What are you going to do to keep the a/f ratio correct? You gonna crack the ECU code and remap it? And will the injectors be able to provide you with enuf fuel? Can the fuel pump keep up?

magnaflows with tips at 2 1/4''

i went with high flow cats instead of the resonators cuz i still need to pass emissions

next i am having the headers fabbed and they will be 2 1/2'' up until the cat where the pipe will obviously shrink back down but reason being is that the stock size of the pipe before the cat is 2'' while after is 1 7/8''

that combined with a REAL cold air intake as opposed to just putting a filter in place of the air box should be a decent power increase...granted were still designing the intake i will definately put up pics or do a write up on it once im done...

To me, the loud wasn't the problem. It was the drone inside at around 2,700 - 3,000 rpms. That's why I had the 3rd set of resonators added.

Although, if you left the stock mid-resonators and the stock cats, and just chopped the rear muf and ran pipes, it would probably be ok.

Is it worth taking out the muffler and getting some tips? and will it sound kind of like a 350z or will it be all drone.

So.... they didnt have 5000 grit sandpaper, just 1500. So I sprayed the tips with WD40, and used the sandpaper, now they are cleaner, but a little scratched up. O well what can you do. Im gonna get some PIAA hyperwhite parking lights this weekend
