Members and Guests of NICO:

For the last few years we have been using vBulletin and have had the forums we know and enjoy today; however, we as an administrator team, feel NICO needs and deserves better.

We all know about the problems with the hacking issues in the past few weeks. These were a result of security flaws not in our host or our server, but in vBulletin itself. Also, the goal of NICO is to be even bigger and better in the future and VB cannot provide us with the power we need to do this.

Therefore, it is my extreme pleasure to announce to you that NICO is moving to a different web hosting company and to a new bulletin board software.

First, about the company: we are moving our sites to RelyNet, which is based in Sacramento, CA. This company specializes in automotive forums and their two biggest clients are VW Vortex and Honda-Tech. We are extremely excited to be working with Mike and the rest of the team over at RelyNet.

Next, the software. We will be migrating everything over to a new software called ZeroForum. RelyNet wrote the software themselves so they are the experts and the transition should go relatively smoothly. ZeroForum is more powerful and faster software that will allow us to grow in ways we couldn't before. We can create an awesome new homepage, add more advertisers, create a cool articles section, add a "mall" for parts and cars, etc. and do so much more.

Now I know most of you are nervous like I am over the transition, but I promise you, everything will be worked on in due time. Here are some answers to some questions you may have:

You username, password, signature, information, avatar and post count will all be migrated over to the new server/software so you will not lose anything.

In the next couple of days, we will shut down NICO for about half a day and re-open it on the new forums.

The forums and threads and posts will stay the same as well.

Thank you for your patience with this as we know it will be for the best. And thank you for all you do for NICO, this move wouldn't be possible without members like you. If you have any questions/comments, please post them here and we will do our best to answer them.

Again thank you and get excited. NICO is only going to get better.

For the adminstrator team,

Nick

VBulletin is great for simple forums. However, the amount of programming, maintenance and whatnot required to incorporate all of NICO's specialized modifications is enormous.

I don't normally like linking to other forums, but go check out http://www.vwvortex.com. We're not intending to "look" like them, but just rip through the site and check out some of the functionality of it....

THAT'S the future of NICO. :)

I'm glad that we are moving onto better software. I was just thinking that I wish NICO was more like Fresh Alloy in terms of the software it runs on. Fresh Alloy is great in terms of keeping track of what posts you have and haven't read. Too bad their page load time is freakin atrocious.

Phax - Actually VB is way more advanced than FreshAlloy is in terms of bulletin board software. UBB boards are really crappy software for customization and they lack any power and take forever to load. Also, there is a limit to how much it can handle. With ZeroForums, we're going to blow older boards outta the water.

180crafter - If you can access NICO from work now, you'll be able to do it after the move.

What I like about UBB is the way it handles the last message read in a thread. For instance on Fresh Alloy I can read a thread, go read a few others threads and then notice that there are 2 new posts in the first thread. When I click on the first thread, it will take me to the first of the 2 new posts.

With VB, whenever I click the little down arrow which is supposed to take me to the first unread (by me) post in the thread, instead it takes me to somewhere in the middle of the thread.

I hope that the new software is more like UBB and less like VB in that regard.

I have a question... will the members' pics that are uploaded to NICO be transferred as well?

This sounds like a great idea. :)

Yeah, I'm a long time browser (never post) on VWVortex and I can attest that it's got excellent up-time. I can't remember the last time those forums were down, and I browse them every day.

Sounds like a hugely postive move for NICO!
