Ok, I'll try to write something tomorrow. Friday is our day of rest here, but I have many projects backed up and am heading for four days of training starting Saturday -- so yes, tomorrow I hit the tracks in Q City. :D

Yes for real, but they all come here. I have over 1,000 illiterate women in training so it makes a good showplace.

A couple quick non-car photos. This is Mrs. R and me in my current bearded look. At this point she is visiting one of my three day care centers.

Chapter 6: On the Road Again

I apologize for not remembering years, but my memory isn’t what it was and I don’t have access to any record over here. But it was a Fourth of July three-day event at Summit Point West Virginia. It was most likely 1998, give or take a year. It was hot, damn hot!!!

I had rented the helmet from the same shop (OG Racing) where year later I would buy my beautiful racing seats pictured in this posting.

I packed during the week. Gas cans, the helmet, some basic tools, a cooler and box of food and some clothes. I drove east from my house to cross into Virginia and then out Highway 7 to Winchester. The Holiday Inn had been designated as the event gathering spot. When I drove in the excitement built as the parking lot was full of trailer vehicles being towed by pick-ups and truck.

Once I checked in and took my clothes to the room, I went back outside. Many people were out putting numbers on their car. I had been assigned number 20. I borrowed someone’s white marker and put a big “20” on each of the rear seat windows.

As I wandered around the parking lot I saw that most vehicles were trailered, but many others were street cars. There were many Mustangs as one day of the event had been designated “Mustang at the Point”. There were many Vets and Porsches, but also Honda Civics and Miatas. Some just plain, others obviously modified.

In the morning I was up at 5:30. By 6:15 cars were being start and I was determined not to be left behind. A long procession of vehicles, first onto the Interstate, one intersection later getting off and heading east on Highway 7. Then at some no-name intersection we turned left onto a country road. The warnings were out, “Be careful as a Highway Patrolman lives on that road and loves to write tickets on racers.”

At a T intersection we turned right and the road became narrower. At point one point the road headed towards a house, then turned just before it. The road continued to curve and turn. We were obviously in West Virginia. Another right turn on a hilly section of road and all vehicles stopped.

Ahead to the right was the entrance. The line filled the entry waiting area and backed down the road for some distance. From my vantage point I couldn’t see anything but cars and more cars. The gate had opened at 6:30 and were entering one-by-one. When I got to the gate I was handed some papers for later reading and a clipboard. Print name, sign, and write “worker” or “driver”. Oh what fun, DRIVER! (to be continued . . .)

This is a picture of the back side of the driver seat. Note the roll cage bar up the left and across the top. A bar behind the seat leaves room for seat adjustment. A diagonal bar provides added driver protection. On the diagonal bar is my video camera mount. The top straps from the 5-point harness are anchored to the back support bar. :)

That is a very nice looking cage. Have you done anything else, to stiffen the frame rails?

I have heard of a foam type stuff, that is used to stiffen frames, and is virtually weightless.

If I ever build another track car (Factory Five Cobra), it will get that treatment.

Keep the pics and stories coming...

No, I would be interested in finding out more. It is amazing the difference in handling and feel when the cage is installed. These are not necessarily better from a street standpoint, just different.

Picture is of the camera mount.

Ok, so this is a boring picture. How many can I post of the camera mount anyway? Well I way behind in my story. It's almost 2 a.m. here so I won't be writing anything tonight. Soon I hope. Where was I anyway? Oh yeah, about to go on track in my black 96 Qt!:ylsuper

With no rear seats and the “tar” removed the vehicle is noticeably louder. With the soft heated seats removed the ride is decidedly rougher and colder. General getting cold on track is not an issue. The time is very intense and one never thinks of the temperature except what it may be doing to your traction. The cage stiffened everything, so that with the race seats you’re feeling every thing. I can’t image wanting to do this to a street car, but on track, it’s sweet!:D

I do switch back and forth between the unmodified ‘96t and the ’94 MAGCQUE. The MAGCQUE has the feel that it’s lower, but I think that’s a factor that when there is no roll the senses mistakenly believe that it must be lower. I can’t tell whether it actually allows for faster corners, or otherwise improves performance. Based on my earlier sentence, lack of roll would make you believe that I am gaining something.

I like the soft feel of the unmodified Q pulling out of a corner; I like the hard feel of a modified Q pulling out of a corner. If I had a choice which would I drive? YOU BEEN LISTENING, I have both! So I love my Qs. :D

As for setting the engine back/lower, yes it's for better balance -- but I have no problem with the balance as it is. That has been my only concern about doing it, what if it is worse then now? Everything leans towards doing it, except for some latent doubt!

I am heading to San Francisco on Saturday. I have a three day meeting, then will head home for a day – just to pick up pictures and get some dates. I should finally have some before shots, and will take some pictures of things my son didn’t know were important.

Sorry for stalling the story, but I’ve known for a few weeks that this trip should occur, so stalled in order to get the additional information.

The pictures that Hitman posted in “Gentlemen, we've done the impossible (Q45 supercharger group buy!!)”, are these what comes out if I post to the picture section? If so, I really better learn how to do that, but every time I get on I’m in a hurry to post and don’t take the time to read how to do it.:oface

Leaving for the Kabul airport in one hour. Should be in San Francisco Sunday noon time, after stops in Dubai and London.

:uzi :oy: :aug2 Just shoot me. Yes, I said that I was headed to the states and would bring info and more pictures back. Well part of that worked. I did copy down my track schedule and find some pictures -- but I'm disappointed that I didn't find all the pictures that I was looking for.

In addition, I returned to Afghanistan with my boss and an employee; and I'm in the process of moving.

I promise, I will get back to the story soon.
