The built-in navigation system does not require a dealer visit to update. You can purchase map updates here:

https://infiniti.navigation.com/product ... nitiNA/USD

They come as a set of five DVDs - the first DVD updates the firmware of the navigation system, and the remaining four DVDs update the maps.

Installing the maps requires a license key, which is really what you are buying for your $149. At the time of purchase, you provide the navigation vendor with your Nav Unit ID, and they generate a unique license key for your Unit ID that allows you to install a certain year's maps. After the firmware update and as you begin the four-DVD map update, the nav system will prompt you for the license key.

I did this myself a couple of weeks ago. There are a few threads here in the forum on the topic, but the biggest issue is that the process takes a long time, and the power to the car shouldn't be interrupted during that time. I used a high end battery charger to provide power to my car while it updated, which I highly recommend vs. letting your car idle for 2+ hours.

The units are too integrated to be changed out. The only option is the Grom which ads in an Android operating system to the factory screen. Some love some don't. I was the latter. There is another screen that came out that supposedly will replace ours and is larger, had Android, and will support the factory screens for HVAC and other info. No one knows for sure though. Seems no one in the US has tried it yet.

Yes you can update your GPS yourself. Just google it. The update is a set of 5 discs.

That's for you to decide, do you just want to update your map for $149 or do you want to spend $650 for another system that piggy backs on the factory system but offers more options?

I would do the VLine, but I may be biased at this point. I love mine. You get realtime map updates + Waze (if you choose) which is real time traffic updates. XM NavTraffic sucked when I had it.

XM NAV Traffic sucks. Not worth any amount of $$. XM Weather was cool. Live radar maps, and it would tell me that there were flooded roads based on the road I was currently on.

Weather sucked too. It would tell me there was something within 20 miles, but not in which direction lol. Beauty of VLine 2 is you could in theory by the satelite radio package you want and install the app on the VLine 2 and use it like you would from your PC...don't actually need to have the XM system in the car.

Honestly, the possibilities with the VLine or other similar Android based units are endless.

what about this one ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/223429140397?u ... e#shpCntId
See this thread: infotainment-update-t623656.html

Second, Infiniti usually has a sale on their previous year navigation dvd's in the summer for, IIRC, about $50 off - may want to wait to pick up a "new to you" one a better discount. Most folks only update about every 3-5 years though if they are even using stock nav. What you want is integration with your phone, ie Vline, so you can use Waze which is constantly updated and provides extra useful info like the location of cops, etc. and doesn't cost you a thing.

Be careful if you get the VL2. Stupid thing scrambled my left side steering wheel controls. Dealer ordered a reset dvd to try and restore the stock radio settings. Hopefully i don't have to replace parts. VL2 has a video/audio sync issue. Audio lags by at least 1/2 a second.

Please clarify? The DVD discs from infiniti.navigation.com will update ONLY the map, NOT the infotainment firmware. Correct?

Correct. There is no updating the infotainment system that came from the factory. It is what it is and can't be changed. The discs you get from NavTeq or similar source will ONLY update the map data and POI data.

What the people above are referring too is an aftermarket infotainment unit called the GROM Audio VLine2.
