Howdy,

Thinking about picking up an M35x that's in need of a transmission. Don't really need to, just bored on the weekends and want something to fiddle around with. I've replaced clutches on a few cars (240sx, g20, integra) and done a rear main seal on a RWD ford ranger. I also have a transmission jack.

Anywho, does anyone have any idea how involved a transmission swap would be? Was planning on just getting one from a salvage yard or ebay. Is there any type of computer relearn that has to take place? I would consult the FSM if they were still available. Never really owned an AWD before so I don't know if it's worth my time.
Any help is appreciated.

Spanks!

Ed might have an idea...I can't imagine, for you considering your experience, it'll be anything out of the ordinary.

It sounds like your time will be free, definitely worth it. Lol

If all you're doing is the transmission swap, there shouldn't be that much to it really. Disconnect transmission lines from radiator, disconnect brackets bracing these cooling lines against the engine, find a way to drop the engine + trans so you can access the trans electrical connector, bellhousing bolts, then bingo.

If you have a lift and trans jack, the work will be less frustrating. Otherwise with jackstands, I'd disconnect the trans mount under the car, then remove the motor mounts so that the whole assembly lowers.

I have to say though, I haven't dug too far into a V6, but the V8 bellhousing bolts are extremely difficult to access with the engine in its normal location.

Things that will help you:
1. The FSM
2. There is a How-to on replacing the front transfer case
3. There is another on the front axles
4. Back in 2014, someone posted that they had bought an AWD, but installed a RWD trans and got it working - something that crossed my mind
5. There is another thread of someone buying an AWD trans very cheap and getting the labor pretty reasonably too.

If I get a chance to find those links, I'll post them up

Not sure if Ed is referring to my transmission replacement escapade, but here is some of the background from last year...

topic613147.html

In short, you should be able to find a decent used transmission for $700-800. I had the shop swap it for $1000, and it has been running strong for the last 20,000 miles (knock on wood).

Like most on this forum, love the car and thrilled to have it still running strong.

Thanks for giving me some direction on this. I was planning on uploading a whole bunch of pics during this process but unfortunately, the car has sold :tisk: I have my eyes on a q45 now though.
