So, like the title says...I'm looking to get some new wheels this Spring. I was leaning towards the FNO1RC, but I'd really rather have a lighter 16" wheel than a 17".

Other than the Kosei K1, can anyone think of any well-made, lighweight 16" wheels for 4-lug applications that have *correct offsets* for our cars?

I like both the 17" 5zigen wheels and the Kosei ones too, but I'm just curious to see if there are any other options out there. Something below the $800 range for a whole set would be groovy.

Thanks!

At $200 you can't get a forged wheel from Rays(kind of the yardstick) in 16"

well made(forged)lightweight(forged)16"(not as common as 17")4 lug (not as common as 5-4-5)

all conspire against you

There is an odd wheel in +12 offset, 16x7 silver paint with machined and clearcoated lip called the...

Yeah, I figure forged wheels were out of the question. I'm willing to go with a high quality cast wheel (equivalent to the K1 or 5zigen)...I should have clarified that.

I'd be happy with something along the price and quality level of the K1 or FNO1RC but in a 4-lug 16" application.

I like the K1's but I don't think Tirerack carries them in 4 lug anymore. I'd prefer to go with a 16" over 17".

I looked at Tirerack's selection of 16" 4 lug wheels and really didn't see much I liked at any price.

Edit: The only thing I even remotely like at Tirerack is the Kosei Double Racer, 16x7, +38mm offset, 16.3 lbs. Still, I don't really like the split spokes and would prefer a nice clean 5-spoke design.

konig holes or konig helium, both are less than 14lbs for a 16"... Rota makes some lightweight wheels for cheap too, their Subzero's are pretty nice and are about 14lbs for a 16x7. i'm prolly gonna get konig holes for my 90' fastback

Search is a good start to your answer. Start at 8" +35 as reference since we know that clears all suspension and still fits under the car

To be safe, I'd keep the offset +30 roughly...but thats just me. I like having a good ammount of strut clearance...some coilovers may not fit in a 8" +35...

SmithSR's GP sports do though.

Look on Jspec.com for used wheels, they have some nice "JDM TYTE" wheels that are 4-lug and whatnot, used but usually good wheels with propper fitments for our cars.-Chet

Yeah good call.. add to which, lowering the car Too Low, can place the spring perch just next to the wheel/tire which will drastically reduce wheel clearance and limit you wheel choices even more!

BadMojo, i'm in the same boat as you, but i'm more or less looking for 15" replacements that are lightweight, good offset, and 4 lug.

Have you tried Team Dynamics? They make nice lightweight wheels that have been used in various types of motorsports for quite a while now. (they're not poop like Rota's) Made in the UK, they have a distributor in CA, and this site just started carrying them: http://robearracing.com. The ProRace 2's come in a 5 spoke design in 16" with a decent offset (probably better to contact the warehouse in CA for better offset selection). Also, try Black Racing rims, i have found some with decent offsets, they're a little more per wheel (like $195ish for 16").

Hope that helps. As for me, I've found that I could either go with the Team Dynamics Pro Race 1's (15x7 +35) or (if they ever answer my emails) SpeedMaster 0-58's(15x7 +31)

Here's a pic of the Pro Race 2 for you to look at:

Like I said, contact Team Dynamic's warehouse in CA (you can find the contact email from TD's official site), they will be happy to help you find something, or special order them for you from the UK.

Sweet, I may do that. I'd really like a 17x8 wheel all around, but for less than FN prices (I'm in college, its hard to make money )

I think I'll try to call them tomorrow from work. I do find it slightly disconcerting that the email address for the US distributor is an Earthlink one. LOL...anyway, the wheels look good and < 14lbs for a 16x7 sounds worthwhile.

I only wish I could still get new Kosei K1's...guess I shouldn't have waited so long.

I've been writing back and forth w/ Don Kane at TD's warehouse in CA. He's willing to drill a set of Pro Race 1 15's for me for $125 a piece per rim, i'm holding out a little longer though to see if the Speedmaster rims come through. Apparently, the 4 lug sm-058's are sold out, i don't know when they'll make more.

It's frustrating trying to find good wheels in 4 lug and decent offsets.

I'm just ready to say "**** it" and get some Jesse James .357 26x10.5...hell, they only weigh 55lbs a piece. That's not bad, right?

Would I have to roll my fenders to fit them on my S13?

Its not even that easy for 5 lug, if you dont want to spend a lot. Good news though, the guy emailed me and said they can order the 17x8 +20 from the UK. Now I just have to see how much they'll cost.

I think I spoke to the same guy today. He's able to get some Pro Race 2 16x7 in a decent offset for me at approx. $140 a piece. He said they weigh approx 15 lbs.

The only downside is that there is about a two month period of time after I order before I actually get them. So...that means getting a replacement if a wheel is damaged will truly suck. Other than that, the wheels sound pretty good.

Get 5 while your'e at for insurance. Ah, it's being stuck between a rock and a hard place. At least the offer he made to me was to drill some pro race 1's he already had in stock to the s13's pattern, that way i would get them in a timely manner. If you think about it BM, if one of your 16's pro race 2's were to get maimed, you could contact the US warehouse and see if they could drill a pro race 2 for you. I don't know, it's all conjecture. 17's would be easy because the 5zigens are available here in the states now, but i just don't TRUST a 45mm sidewall on the roads around where i live.

search ebay... you'll be able to find lots of wheels 16 and 17 inch for under $800 with tires, and some will be light weight, some will not... just search for known light weight wheels and you should come up with some...

a friend of mine has the fn01rc's and they are light and soo sweet looking on his kouki

lightweight+well-made+correct offset doesn't go hand-in-hand on ebay searches, it's a hit or miss if you find anything decent. Usually what comes up are used rims from Japan, but i don't know about you people, but the possibility of the rims being out of round is a deal-breaker.

And again, you may well end up with an obscure wheel that will take forever to replace.

I spoke with Grant at Tirerack today, and they really don't have anything in stock that fits my criteria. The Kosei K1 Race wheels are indeed gone in 4 lug (I was pretty sure of this anyway). I really need to get some new tires this spring and want to upgrade wheels at the same time.

Unless another option presents itself, I'm probably going to order those Pro Race 2 wheels in 16x7 around March. I figure I'll get 'em buy May and slap some Yoko AVS ES100's on there for the summer.

A big part of me wants to just get some 5zigen wheels from Alan and just enjoy them. Another part of me is concerned, like you, with running these wheels on less than ideal surfaces. PA roads suck as much, if not more than the ones in DE.

Choices...choices. Regardless, I need to get some new tires and I'm not going to get new tires only to ditch 'em when I get new wheels later. The tire+wheel thing must be done this spring.

So how are you doing in the snow BM? I have Potenza RE950's and they do so-so in 3" or less, inclines=not going to happen. I've driven through PA quite frequently, i have an ex-bf that lives in Springfield, PA, the roads are crappy as hell, but the blow that rendered mystock alloys out-of-round (two of them are) happened in DE on some roads that were under construction but i could not avoid en route to class.

Anyhow, the TD's are a great option, but i've also considered getting a 15 or 16" set of rims that are a poopy +40 offset and get the bolt-on type, hub-centric wheel spacers. That seems like the only thing you can do if you want to get rims that are semi-popular, that are 4x114, but come in a crappy offset. Probably the only way to go.

yeah, those +20 look like a decent option. made by rota (meh), about 17 lbs, +20 is a good offset, you could do a 225/50/16 on that wheel all around, look good, fit well, and clear coilovers.

What? Since when did Rota make anything lower than a +38 offset? I don't believe it, it's a shame i can't see the groupbuys section on Zilvia. I didn't even know they made the 'Grid' wheel in a 4x114 bolt pattern as well. Seems fishy.
