Hey, I'm not asking in general if lightweight crank pulleys are worth it, I'm asking if they're worth it on a KA-T with 8 psi of boost...I've heard that they do quite a bit for turbocharged cars, and for their $119 price tag, I figure it'd be a good investment if it produces a noticeable increase in "responsiveness"..I've heard they allow the turbo to spool up quicker by allowing you to rev quicker....Is anyone here running a lightened crank pulley on a KAT? And...could they give before/after impressions after installing it on a KAT?

Also, a while ago I saw a link for an ASP crank pulley for like $109...anyone know where the chepest place to get one is?

Thoughts? Opinions?Marc

I've personally never liked underdrive/light pullies, especially on a car that's supposed to have a harmonic balancer. If you're going to buy a lightweight anything, IMO you should make it the driveshaft.

For $109, why not? It's worth a few HP, and you can know that you're spinning the water pump/alternator/PS pump a little slower, maybe lengthening their life a little...

And the KA DOES NOT have a harmonic balancer...the OEM pulley has some rubber fused with it, but it's for absorbing the shock when the A/C turns on. So going to a pulley without a harmonic balancer does no harm...

And I'd like a lightweight driveshaft to complement the pulley, for sure...

D'oh, it's a 95! I keep thinking in SOHC terms, because i know the E has a harmonic balancer.

no it doesn't.

personally, instead of spending the money on underdrive pullies, i'd just turn up the boost ;) .

my brother got an underdrive pulley and unfortunately it.. underdrove all his accessories and he had to get a bigger alternator to keep his headlights bright and his car working right.

Ok. Then explain to me what this thing is on the crank pulley that's labeled in the FSM "Crank Damper"?

Is it something for the AC like on the DE?

if u go with a quality pulley manufactuer such as unorthadox, you should see no changes in the accessories. at least thats what ive heard from every review ive read of the unorthadox pulley set.

And if that's the case, bump your idle up to 800 and it'll spin as fast as before with the stock pulley and a 650rpm idle.

I bought an underdrive pulley (southwest autoworks brand - custom for the altima) and it really helped. I had this before I put the turbo on so I don't know the difference as far as turbo with and without, but I can tell you when I put it on all motor, it was awesome.

Now that I'm a manual and put a lightened flywheel on, it's even better. The engine is so responsive.. and QUICK.

WTF?????

You get an underdrive pulley that spins the accessories slower by 15%...

Say your idle was 700...add 15% and you get 805rpm. The engine is now spinning faster, and the accessories are moving the same speed as before.

If you need a 2000rpm idle for your lights not to dim, you have another issue...

i got the ASP pulley on my car, as far as underdriving goes, its not bad to the point where the headlights would go dim. the only noticable side effect is that the a/c is not as cold on idle. the performance gain is definitly noticable. i put hte pulley on when i was still n/a so i would have no clue on how the pulley reacted to boost. but anyways, you definitly get better gas mileage with it. so if you got the asp that you can get for around 120, the gas mileage that you gain will more then pay of itself in the long run.

So is there any way to dampen the crank ? And from what im reading it doesnt sound like the underdrive pulley is worth it. I am liking the aluminum drive shaft idea tho. Where can i get an aluminum drive shaft ?

ull prolly have to get one custom made. ive seen it done for a bunch of project cars on TV shows and such but i cant remember any of the companies they used to do it, but a carbon fiber driveshaft would be even cooler!

Geezus carbon would be kewl but it would probly cost $1k I wonder how much a custom aluminum driveline would cost even.

what do most people prefer? the ASP or UR pulley? i was thinking about getting the UR pulley because they are a larger company. also what do u guys think of the whole UR pulley set? worth the money? ive think if seen 12 hp gain with the set to the wheels somewhere

I think the whole kit isn't worth like the $400 price tag...a $120 ASP is much more cost-effective. All of those other pulleys are driven off of the crank, so if you lighten the crank one, it will make the most difference. i think the other ones are more of a bling bling factor...just my $.02

I think everyone should read the article on crank pulleys in the grassroots motorsports from like.. may of this year. Its got an RX7 being dyno'd on the cover, I think.

Basically says lighter is bad.
