Once you start putting in upgraded internals, with machine shop costs, expect costs to go up about another $1k.

How much power are you looking to make? The stock internals can take about 300ft/lbs of torque, from then on the rods start bending.

I'm not all the sure on building KA-E heads though, I've never looking into that.

Want me to delve deeper into anything else? I only just layed down some basic ish I'd tell other people when we're at meets or w/e.
the head is my worry... but i figure a good shop (and i know of one) could make it work... i want a 6.5-7k redline... and at least 350 torque... 380 is more desirable with 400 being the ultimate goal... power... could almost care less as torque is more important

Yeah, I've rarely seen a KA-E rev that high, maybe it's because nobody tried.
400 torque is achievable easily, you just need to build the engine well and get a proper tune.
If it's E85 that'll be easy peasy.
The KA loooves the T3 turbos, JGS makes a topmount cast iron manifold for both the DE and E, real quality stuff.
You can buy the kit that doesn't come with the turbo and source a used one yourself to save some bucks.

Top feed injectors are plentiful, I think you can get some RX-7 injectors for cheap (I believe they are topfeed) and I think Subies have topfeeds as well.

Mostly for the KA, as long as the internals are done right and the tune is good, you can cheap out elsewhere and it's all groovy.

i know the DE revs higher... i'm not opposed to the DE... is the 400 torque still easy to achieve? the 400 torque is the main goal.... i figured it'd be easier to hit with an E vs. DE... but if the DE can still hit 400 easy i might just to that.... i need the 7ish K redline in order to hit the proper speed at the top of 2nd gear... either that or use the lower revving E and find a diff that works to make up for the redline

I think 400 torque will be and achievable goal. The DE can hit 7k rpm no problem, but I'm not sure what the redline is for the single cam.
Also, as you increase the boost and stuff, the characteristic lower end torque is still there, but adding more boost won't add power through the curve evenly.

You can see that on this dyno chart. On a car that's setup like mine, the peak torque won't be at the low revs, but I'm not sure if that was what you were looking for.

This is on a dual cam, but it's quite similar for the single cams as well.

The E can easily turn that. Our L series races motors routinely see 8k, sometime 9+ on missed shifts, without incident.

what kind of revs are we talking there? it needs to be on the boost/torque by 2,000 with real boost and higher torque kicking in by 2,500... it'll be a small turbo

Oh, with a small turbo, full boost by 2.5k should be easy.

You're not going to see huge power with a turbo that spools at 2k but you'll have a ton of usable power. If I was you I'd take a stock sohc, get a good cast t2 flanged manifold, some 440 injectors, a 3" exhaust, good intercooler, and a gt2871r. Tune it all with nistune or MS3 and enjoy 200+ whp, quick spool and all that goodness for less than 2500.

You won't hook up more power than that in a truck anyway. Your weight balance just won't do it.

Yeah that's the problem with the tiny turbos on a KA, they start choking once you try to make more than 300hp.
They can spool a T3 pretty quick though, but maybe more like high boost at 3k rpm, but that changes from turbo to turbo.

Making a 400-hp KA is gonna cost you more than the truck. I'd know.

Skip boost, get big NA power.

An hy35 or he351(?) might be a decent bet on a ka. They're super solid and cheap. EXCELLENT turbo but I haven't checked a map for one on a ka.

wellp... looks like i might have it planned then KA powa y0!

i've just been looking into things... and with the rules in my class i'm never going to be competitive enough... the rules say i must keep the Z24 and basically bump the hell out of the compression and nothing else... that's not cool because my power will never be high enough to make up for the weight disadvantage i'll have

the class i will move to is technically harder... but in recent history it has actually been running around the same times.... so basically, i move to that class which is barely harder... but put an engine in that has about 200 torque advantage AND add up to 8 sqft of vertical wing (meaning a big a** splitter and rear wing)

that's not my worry... the truck is a project... the suspension will cost more than the engine build :couch:

Will moving up a class allow you to run a better trans? A good close ratio trans will do more for you than 100 hp on short technical courses.

i can actually do that now... all that it says is you need a trans that has forward AND reverse gears

Just got back from our walk. Two javelina * wild desert pig* crossed the road in front of us. These two were pretty docile but they can be pretty aggressive if cornered. Kinda cool. Greg has lived here since 1983 and this was the first time he had ever seen one.
