I was performing a rendition of the auxiliary input mod outlined here: http://thephotobooth.smugmug.com/galler ... 8886_L7mn9 on my Miata when I discovered my shift knob was stripped (most likely from the dudes that installed satellite radio on the car from the previous owner... they boogered up some other stuff too).
Anyway, I was debating making my own out of aluminum bar stock but then thought this would be much faster and easier, seeing as how I ordered a 2008 350z shift knob, and this would just be temporary. It also won't burn the s*** out of my hand.
Drilled it, tapped it (M10x1.25, same as Nissan!), and then laser engraved it with a laser I set up at work. This was my first time ever lasing plastic, and the results are pretty different than marking steel (I only used 5% of the laser's power, as opposed to the normal 85-90% for metal). I dunno what a golf ball is made out of, but it kinda left a molten, sticky substance where I lased. I rounded up some metallic dust junk from our machine shop and rubbed it in there. It came out kinda splotchy, but I'm hoping it will smooth out in the future.
What do you guys think?
