i know what the knock sensor does. but I have a question. if I dont change it I heard it can be real bad and terminal to your engine is that true? i have had a bad knock sensor for years and havent changed it. am I in trouble? also I get triible gas mileage. 16 mpg could this be the problem? thx.

The bad gas mileage is due to your timing being retarded. When the knock sensor died, I believe that the ECU retards the timing. You're best off to have this fixed. You will notice an increase in mileage and HP.

not sure what yr/model your car is, but, noah is right on it. if you have a 4th gen, the knock sensor could take you only 30-45 min. it's located just below the upper intake manifold. has one bolt holding it in. just need some good tools to get ot it. if you have a nice mechanic friend, they should only charge about $30-$45 knock sensor is usually around $130-$150.

I have a 2000,is the knock sensor in the same place?

It is but the intake is different on the 2000 maximas so the procedure may not work. 95 to 99 has enough clearance to reach the sensor.
